Capital Medical University (CMU), established in 1960, is a key higher education institution in Beijing, jointly built by the Beijing Municipal Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education. The first president was Professor Wu Jieping, a renowned urology expert, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The current Party Secretary is Researcher Hu Wenliang, and the President is Professor Rao Yi, a prominent molecular neurobiologist.
The university's main campus includes 11 colleges and 1 research center, such as the College of Basic Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Medical Humanities, School of General Medicine and Continuing Education, School of Marxism, International College, and Yanqing Medical College, along with the Brain Diseases Research Center. The university has 22 affiliated teaching hospitals (20 of which are teaching hospitals), including the Capital Medical University Xuanwu Hospital (First Clinical College), Beijing Friendship Hospital (Second Clinical College), Beijing Chaoyang Hospital (Third Clinical College), Beijing Tongren Hospital (Fourth Clinical College), Beijing Tiantan Hospital (Fifth Clinical College), Beijing Anzhen Hospital (Sixth Clinical College), Beijing Jishuitan Hospital (Seventh Clinical College), Fuxing Hospital (Eighth Clinical College), Beijing Youan Hospital (Ninth Clinical College), Beijing Chest Hospital (Tenth Clinical College), Capital Medical University Sanbo Brain Hospital (Eleventh Clinical College), Beijing Ditan Hospital (Twelfth Clinical College), Beijing Children's Hospital (Pediatrics College), Beijing Stomatological Hospital (Dentistry College), Beijing An Ding Hospital (Mental Health College), Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (Obstetrics and Gynecology College), Beijing TCM Hospital (Traditional Chinese Medicine College), Beijing Century Tian Hospital (Oncology College), Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital (Beijing Rehabilitation College), Beijing Luhe Hospital (Luhe Clinical Medical College), China Rehabilitation Research Center (Rehabilitation College), Japan-China Friendship Hospital (Japan-China Friendship Clinical Medical College), and the Prevention Medicine Teaching Base (Beijing CDC). The university also has 40 clinical specialty colleges and 40 clinical diagnostic and research centers.
The university currently has 15,732 full-time students, including 7,345 graduate students, 7,311 undergraduates, 509 higher vocational students, 567 international students, and 1,916 adult education students. There are 7,266 teachers, including 7 academicians, 1,176 professors, 1,889 associate professors, 1,281 doctoral supervisors, and 1,793 master's supervisors.
The university offers 8 national key disciplines, 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 93 national clinical key specialties (including Traditional Chinese Medicine), 14 key (cultivation) disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 4 first-level key disciplines in Beijing, 6 second-level key disciplines in Beijing, and 1 interdisciplinary key discipline in Beijing. Its clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, neuroscience and behavior, immunology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, general social sciences, psychiatry and psychology, microbiology, environmental and ecological sciences, chemistry, and materials science rank in the top 1% globally according to ESI rankings. Among these, clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, and neuroscience rank in the top 0.1%, and immunology, biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology and genetics rank in the top 0.3%.
The university has 8 doctoral and 13 master's degree points for first-level disciplines, with 59 doctoral and 77 master's degree points for second- and third-level disciplines. It offers master's and doctoral degrees in all medical and medical-related fields and has 9 postdoctoral research stations. The university's academic programs include clinical medicine, pediatrics, stomatology, preventive medicine, psychiatry, pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, nursing, biomedical engineering, prosthetics and orthotics engineering, intelligent medical engineering, rehabilitation therapy, and more.
In the past five years, the university has undertaken 3,578 scientific research projects, including 2,083 national-level projects, with total research funding of 3.17 billion yuan. The university has received 167 various awards, including 10 national science and technology progress awards, 38 Beijing science and technology awards, 12 Ministry of Education scientific research awards, 37 Chinese Medical Science and Technology awards, and many others. It has also published 6,774 patents.
Capital Medical University maintains a strong international presence, with partnerships with universities and institutions in over 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It has become a key university for the "Belt and Road" initiative and hosts a large number of international students.
