Chaohu University is a full-time public undergraduate institution under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. Established in 1977, its predecessor was Chaohu Normal College. In April 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to an undergraduate institution and renamed Chaohu University. In June 2006, it was granted the authority to confer bachelor's degrees. In October 2019, it was approved as a candidate for granting master's degrees, and in February 2024, it was officially recognized as a key institution for the establishment of master's degree programs.
The university covers an area of 1373.41 mu (approximately 91.6 hectares). It consists of 15 secondary colleges and offers 56 undergraduate programs. The faculty includes 1,160 members, with 382 holding senior titles, including one specially appointed Wanjiang Scholar professor, four provincial academic leaders and reserve candidates, two leaders in Jianghuai cultural innovation, 17 provincial-level teaching masters, 38 provincial-level rising teaching stars, 16 provincial-level teaching teams, and five provincial-level research teams. Additionally, there are 100 master's degree advisors and 129 jointly trained master's students. Among the faculty, 549 are dual-qualified professionals. The university has 17,052 full-time students.
The university adheres to the mission of being "local and application-oriented." It currently boasts three national-level first-class undergraduate program construction sites, one nationally recognized specialty program, 12 provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites, eight provincial specialty programs, six provincial comprehensive reform pilot programs, two provincial first-class (brand) programs, five provincial exemplary experimental and training centers, 19 provincial excellent talent education programs, and 56 provincial and higher-level teaching achievement awards.
Chaohu University emphasizes academic development to support talent cultivation. Two disciplines—Materials Science and Engineering, and Sports Science—have been included in Anhui Province's application-oriented peak discipline cultivation projects. The university prioritizes the development of master's programs in sports, materials and chemical engineering, and electronic information, while focusing on 11 key disciplines such as Applied Economics. The university currently operates five provincial research platforms, including the Anhui High-Efficiency Intelligent Photovoltaic Module Engineering Research Center and the Anhui High-Frequency Soft Magnetic and Ceramic Powder Material Engineering Research Center, as well as three departmental research platforms, including the Anhui Literature and Art Criticism Base. Additionally, it has 33 university-level platforms, including the Bioinformatics and Big Data Research Institute. In recent years, it has undertaken 29 national-level research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Fund, and the National Arts Fund, as well as over 500 provincial-level projects. The university has been granted over 200 national invention patents.
The university fosters development through service and contribution. It has implemented action plans to support Anhui Province's development as "three areas and one zone" and to enhance the socioeconomic development of the Chaohu Lake region. To date, the university has signed over 700 industry-university-research cooperation agreements with entities such as the Ancha Economic Development Zone, Chaohu City Government, Hefei Sports Bureau, and Wuwei Group, generating nearly 200 million yuan in project funding. More than 60 outcomes have been adopted by governments or received leadership recognition, including six key recommendations endorsed by provincial leaders.
Committed to open cooperation, Chaohu University actively expands exchanges with countries along the "Belt and Road." It has established partnerships with 18 institutions in countries such as South Korea, the United States, Ireland, and Malaysia. Notably, it collaborates with Shannon Institute of Technology in Ireland to offer a "3+1" undergraduate hotel management program. The university is also integrated into the Yangtze River Delta educational framework and has signed strategic agreements with Changzhou University and Jiaxing University. Additionally, it collaborates with nine other universities on joint master's programs.
Guided by the educational philosophy of "integrating virtue and knowledge, and unifying knowledge and practice," the university has cultivated over 80,000 high-level professionals since its inception. These graduates have significantly contributed to national and regional socioeconomic development. Over the past five years, students have won 3,746 awards in academic and skill competitions at the provincial level or higher, including 697 national awards. One student was named "International Student Ambassador" by Ireland's Ministry of Education (2022–2023), and another received the "National University Graduate Excellence Award" (2022). Two students were featured in People's Daily for earning national scholarships, while six were honored as "China's Self-Reliant College Students."
At this new historical juncture, Chaohu University is guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It fully implements the Party's education policies, centers on cultivating virtue through education, and adheres to the development path of "rooted in Hefei, serving the Chaohu region, contributing to Anhui Province, and integrating into the Yangtze River Delta." The university strives for high-quality development, emphasizing innovation and its unique application-oriented character, with the goal of becoming a high-level university with distinctive features.
