Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) is one of the first "world first-class universities with first-class disciplines" in China. Its predecessor was Chengdu College of Geological Exploration founded in 1956, one of the three geological colleges founded in the early years of the People's Republic of China. It was renamed Chengdu Institute of Geology in 1958, Chengdu Institute of Technology in 1993, and Chengdu University of Technology in 2001. The university was directly administrated by the Ministry of Geology, the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Land and Resources in succession until its administration was delegated to the local government in 2000. Since then, it has been co-run by the central and local governments and administrated by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2010, it became a university jointly run by the Ministry of Land and Resources and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2019, it became "a world first-class university with first-class disciplines" jointly run by the Ministry of Education and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. In 2022, CDUT was included in the list of "world first-class universities with first-class disciplines" in China again.
Over the past half a century, CDUT has been committed to serving the motherland, despite trials and hardships. So far, the university has provided nearly 300,000 excellent talents for the society, making important contributions to the economic and social development of China. Among them, well-known scholars, experts, and managers have emerged, including five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. After years of development, CDUT has created a motto of "Seeking Truth, Seeking Triumph", developed a fine tradition of "working perseveringly to create a better future", and formed an enterprising spirit of "striving for the best".
CDUT has two campuses, i.e., Chengdu Campus and Yibin Campus, covering a total area of 3,487 mu and a building area of 1.346 million square meters. Dotted with lush trees and blossoming flowers, CDUT is an ideal place for studying. CDUT strives to cultivate high-caliber talents with humanistic feelings, scientific literacy, a sense of responsibility, international vision, pioneering spirit, and hands-on ability. Currently, there are 38,373 full-time students, including 30,161 undergraduates and 8,065 postgraduates. CDUT has 20 teaching schools, 1 institute of sedimentary geology, 1 institute of geological survey, and 1 institute of industrial development, as well as one independent college (The Engineering & Technical College of Chengdu University of Technology). CDUT has been selected as one of China's top 50 universities with typical experience in the employment of graduates and one of China's top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship.
CDUT is a multi-disciplinary university featuring distinct discipline advantages and focusing on science and engineering. It stands out by virtue of its superior disciplines of geology, petroleum, resource, nuclear technology, and environment, and characteristic disciplines of civil engineering, chemical engineering, materials, electronics, machinery, information, and management. Meanwhile, it develops disciplines such as business administration, literature, law, foreign languages, arts, and physical education in a coordinated way. Currently, CDUT is qualified to confer doctoral degrees in 7 primary disciplines and 1 doctoral major and master's degrees in 26 primary disciplines and 16 majors. It has 6 postdoctoral research stations and 1 innovative practice base for postdoctoral students of Sichuan Province. Besides, it has 1 primary national key discipline, 3 secondary national key disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, and 14 provincial key disciplines. Among them, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering was selected into the second list of "world first-class disciplines at first-class universities" in China. Four disciplines (i.e., Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental Science/Ecology, and Chemistry) ranked among the world’s top 1% in ESI. Earth Science and Environmental Science and Ecology were included in the list of first-class disciplines in Sichuan Province.
CDUT has 66 undergraduate enrollment majors (categories), including 23 national first-class majors, 8 national characteristic majors, 10 engineering education-certified majors, 4 national comprehensive reform projects, 48 provincial first-class majors, 12 provincial characteristic majors, and 13 provincial comprehensive reform pilot projects. As a participant in the "Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program (EEETP)" of the Ministry of Education, CDUT currently offers 7 national EEETP pilot majors (including independent enrollment). With 4 national demonstration centers for experimental teaching, 3 national centers for engineering practice education, and 2 national off-campus practice education bases for college students, CDUT is an implementer of the national innovation and entrepreneurship program for college students. In addition, CDUT offers 11 national first-class courses and 192 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. Up to now, CDUT has won 5 national prizes for teaching achievements.
CDUT is an agglomeration of famous teachers and gifted people. There are 2,893 faculty members, including 465 professors and 804 associate professors. As of December 2022, CDUT had won national talent projects, titles, and honors 208 times, including 8 awardees of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 awardees of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Youth Scholars, 14 national candidates for the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project, 6 national young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, 1 IEEE Fellow, 2 academicians of other countries, 2 national outstanding professional and technical talents, 6 persons supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University, 105 experts enjoying the special government allowance from the State Council, 1 awardee of the National Outstanding Teacher Award for Higher Education, 7 teachers with the title of "National Excellent Teacher", and 4 recipients of the National May Labor Day Medal. CDUT has also won provincial and ministerial talent projects, titles, and honors 518 times. Academician Liu Baojun serves as Honorary President of CDUT. At present, 35 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are employed by the university through the flexible introduction and other ways. CDUT has 4 academician work teams, 1 national teaching team, 1 innovation group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 team of the "Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program" of the Ministry of Education, 1 Huang Danian-style teacher team among Chinese universities, 15 scientific and technological innovation teams (innovation research groups) in Sichuan Province, and 1 high-level research team of social science of Sichuan Province.
Standing at the world's scientific and technological frontier, CDUT has been bravely striving to reach the peak of scientific and technological innovation to adapt to the country's major strategic needs. It has two state key laboratories (the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection and the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration) and 34 science and technology platforms under the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Emergency Management, and Sichuan Provincial People's Government. CDUT has participated in successfully establishing the Tianfu Yongxing Laboratory and applying for the establishment of the Research Department of Carbon Sink and Geological Carbon Fixation. CDUT has led the establishment of the International Research Association on Large Landslides (iRALL) and other international academic organizations and undertaken international big science programs such as Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE). CDUT has successively undertaken a large number of important projects such as national key R&D programs, national major science and technology projects, national science and technology support programs, projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Fund of China, projects under the National 863 Program, the National 973 Program and the National Geological Survey Program, and strategic research and consulting projects of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. So far, CDUT has won a total of 1,040 awards (times) such as national and provincial science and technology awards, including national awards such as 1 special prize, 4 first prizes, 9 second prizes and 7 third prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, 1 second prize of the National Natural Science Award, 1 gold prize of the Chinese Patent Award, and 2 third prizes of the National Technological Inventions Award.
In the university, Chengdu Natural History Museum (the Museum of Chengdu University of Technology) established jointly by CDUT and Chengdu Municipal People's Government houses more than 60,000 specimens, including a world-famous fossils "Hechuan Mamenchisaurus". The library is home to 2.96 million printed books and periodicals, 96 digital resource databases, 2.63 million electronic books, and 1.37 million electronic journals. In terms of archives management, it has reached the national level-1 standard for scientific and technological institutions. CDUT runs and publishes 6 academic journals, including 2 Chinese core journals of Peking University, 2 journals included in CSCD, and 4 scientific and technological core journals. CDUT also runs the international journal Ore and Energy Resource Geography with Elsevier. In addition, CDUT has set up platforms such as the National Cultural Quality Education Base for College Students, the Institute for Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture, and the "Integrity Cultivation Gallery" of the Sichuan Integrity Cultural Education Base for Colleges and Universities in Sichuan Province.
Attaching great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation, CDUT has established long-term industry-education-research cooperative relationships with large national enterprises and scientific research institutes in the fields of resources, energy, environment, construction, military and high-tech. As an implementer of innovative projects of the China Scholarship Council and other government-funded projects of China, CDUT has successively established exchange and cooperation relationships with more than 180 universities and scientific research institutions in the UK, Canada, Russia, the US, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Italy, etc. CDUT has been authorized to develop international projects, including the China-UK international cooperation project between the Newton Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. CDUT has four Sino-foreign cooperative majors. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, CDUT set up Chengdu University of Technology Oxford Brookes College, a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, becoming the first to do so among colleges and universities run by Sichuan Provincial People's Government.
With a lifelong passion for serving the country and the people, CDUT adheres to the essence of serving the motherland through pioneering, innovation, and science and technology, demonstrates the courage of bravely shouldering heavy tasks and overcoming difficulties, and actively contributes wisdom and strength to national, industrial, and local construction and development. CDUT has actively participated in such projects as the West-to-East Power Transmission Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, oil and gas exploration, energy development, mineral exploration, large-scale hydropower, environmental protection, ecological restoration, and new energy and new material applications. In addition, CDUT has made positive contributions to tourism and urban and rural planning, philosophical and social science research, cultural and artistic prosperity, targeted poverty alleviation, rural revitalization, etc. With full enthusiasm and practical actions, CDUT faculty members have been serving national prosperity, social prosperity, and people's well-being.
