Shanxi Datong University is located in Datong, a city known as a "Historic and Cultural City of China." The university’s history can be traced back to the 1950s. In 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university was established through the merger of Yanbei Normal College, Datong Medical College, Datong Vocational and Technical College, and Shanxi Industrial Vocational and Technical College. It officially opened in 2006. In 2016, it was selected as a pilot university for the transformation to application-oriented undergraduate education in Shanxi Province. In 2017, it became the only university jointly constructed by both the provincial government and the municipal government of Datong. In 2018, the university was authorized to grant master's degrees. In 2021, it was selected as one of the first high-level application-oriented universities in Shanxi Province.

The university consists of the Yudong Campus and Xinpingwang Campus, covering a total area of 2,121.3 acres, with a building area of 903,400 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 434 million yuan, and the library has 2.875 million physical books, 1.14 million electronic books, and 775,700 electronic journals. The university has 32,045 full-time undergraduate students, 297 master's students, and 2,998 continuing education students. There are 2,328 staff members (excluding the affiliated hospital), with 1,602 full-time faculty, including 787 professional and technical staff with senior titles. There are 428 doctoral faculty members (excluding 67 doctoral students). The university has 1 national advanced worker, 1 recipient of the National May Day Labor Medal, 1 "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" scholar from the Ministry of Education, 8 provincial-level teaching masters, 4 provincial academic and technical leaders, 1 emerging industry leader in Shanxi, 3 provincial discipline leaders, 33 "Three Jin Talents," and 27 academic and technical leaders in Datong City. The university offers 74 undergraduate programs, covering 10 academic disciplines, including literature, history, agriculture, science, engineering, and medicine. Among these, 4 programs are recognized as national first-class programs, 16 are provincial first-class programs, 1 is a national first-class course, and 82 are provincial first-class courses. The clinical medicine program has been accredited. The university also offers 3 first-level master's degree programs, 7 master's degree categories, and 12 provincial first-level disciplines.

In 2021, the university's third Party Congress established a three-step strategy for the new era: by 2025, it will fully meet the standards of a high-level application-oriented university and become the leading application-oriented university in Shanxi; by 2030, it will significantly improve its overall strength and enter the top tier of similar universities in the Shanxi, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia region; and by 2035, it will have developed leading disciplines and research fields, reached an advanced level in talent cultivation, and made significant contributions to local industries. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the university aims to firmly establish the philosophy of "providing every teacher and student with opportunities to shine in life," focusing on developing disciplines in the fields of humanities, medical sciences, engineering, and teacher training, and implementing the "1310" strategy. The university is committed to optimizing disciplines, renewing professional programs, improving teaching quality, fostering scientific and technological innovation, deepening industry-education integration, and strengthening governance and cultural innovation.

The university places a strong emphasis on moral education and the cultivation of high-quality application-oriented talents. It implements a comprehensive education model focusing on virtue, knowledge, physical fitness, beauty, and labor. The university has developed an innovative "Three All-Round Education" model, integrating student communities with a one-stop management system. It was selected as a pilot school for first-aid education in China, and it has been designated as a demonstration site for the construction of socialist core values in Shanxi Province. The university aims to integrate talent development into the industrial chain and focuses on constructing a curriculum system aligned with regional characteristics and industry needs, especially under the "dual carbon" policy. Since 2019, the university has been approved for 3 national teaching reform projects, 171 provincial teaching reform projects, 1 national teaching achievement award, and 18 provincial teaching achievement awards, with 60 industry-education cooperation projects. Over the past 70 years, the university has cultivated over 210,000 professionals for the region.

Shanxi Datong University has enhanced its organized research capabilities to support high-level self-reliance and innovation. It focuses on the strategic needs of emerging industries in Shanxi and has established 1 engineering research center under the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, 1 national innovation team for forestry and grassland, and several provincial research platforms, including laboratories, research centers, and think tanks. In the last five years, the university has led 1,490 external research projects, including 26 national-level projects and 13 ministerial-level projects. It has published over 4,580 academic papers, with 875 outstanding Chinese-language papers and 995 international papers, and it has published more than 294 books. The university has also won 54 provincial-level scientific research awards.

The university has deepened its integration of industry and education through the "Modern Industry Academy Construction Project," enhancing industry-university-research cooperation. It has developed strategic partnerships with over 360 enterprises and organizations, including People’s Daily, Huawei, and Shanxi Energy Holding Group. By actively participating in the economic transformation of Shanxi, the university aims to support the local economy through strategic collaborations and talent development. It has also established 4 provincial-level industrial colleges and is building a model for modern industrial colleges.

The university is also dedicated to preserving and innovating the region's cultural heritage. It has developed the "Yungang Studies" discipline, which is now recognized in national rankings and has earned several prestigious academic grants. The university promotes cultural education through programs such as the "Yungang Lectures," "Red Culture Lectures," and "Datong Lectures," which aim to tell stories of the Party, ethnic integration, and Datong's development.

In terms of international collaboration, the university has established joint programs with universities such as Beijing University of Technology, Sichuan International Studies University, and has formed partnerships with international institutions in Germany, the United States, Russia, and Japan, expanding its global influence.

Since the "14th Five-Year Plan," Shanxi Datong University has entered a period of rapid development with a bright future.
