eilongjiang Institute of Science and Technology is located along the beautiful Songhua River in Harbin, the "Ice City" and "Summer Capital." After 76 years of development, it has become a multi-disciplinary university with coordinated development in the fields of science, engineering, management, literature, economics, and law. It primarily focuses on engineering, with a strong emphasis on mining, and has made outstanding contributions to the regional economy and the development of China's coal industry, earning the reputation as "the backbone of the coal industry." The university is co-sponsored by the Heilongjiang Provincial Government and the Ministry of Emergency Management (formerly the State Administration of Work Safety), is recognized as an institution with excellent national teaching performance, and is a model university for the development of applied undergraduate education in Heilongjiang Province.
The university was established in 1947, originally as the first mining school in China, founded by the Chinese Communist Party under the name Northeast Workers' School. In 1954, it merged with the Hegang Coal Mine School to form Jixi Coal Mine School. In 1978, the State Council approved the establishment of Jixi Mining College, which was renamed Heilongjiang Mining College in 1981, under the administration of the former State Coal Industry Ministry. In 1998, the university was transferred to local governance and adopted a system of joint construction between the central and local governments, with primary management by Heilongjiang Province. In 2000, it was renamed Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology, and in 2013, it became Heilongjiang Institute of Science and Technology.
The university adheres to the principle of “student-centered and responsible for student success” and focuses on cultivating high-quality, application-oriented talents with strong moral qualities and practical capabilities. Currently, the university has 17 colleges and a total of 24,492 full-time students, including 22,910 undergraduates, 1,582 graduate students (both master's and doctoral), and a high undergraduate employment rate that has ranked among the top in the province for the past 20 years. It has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a "National Model University for Graduate Employment" and a "National Advanced Collective in Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Education."
The university emphasizes "respect for teachers and service to teachers" and vigorously implements a "talent-driven university" strategy. It currently employs 1,785 staff members and has produced a large number of outstanding individuals and teams, including "National Excellent Teachers," "National Outstanding Educators," "Provincial Excellent Teachers," "Provincial-Level Teaching Masters," and "Educational Research Teams," as well as a large number of "dual-skilled" teachers.
The university is home to a doctoral program in "Emergency Rescue and Impact Control of Coal Mine Accidents," which grants doctoral degrees in Safety Science and Engineering. It also boasts a postdoctoral research station in Safety Science and Engineering and 11 authorized master's programs in various fields. It has 9 provincial-level talent teams and 5 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 9 provincial engineering research centers, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, and several high-end scientific and technological service platforms, including a world-class engineering training and fundamental experimental center.
Currently, the university offers 61 undergraduate programs, with 6 National First-Class Undergraduate Programs, 18 Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Programs, and 6 programs accredited by the national engineering education certification. It also offers 2 national first-class courses, 16 provincial first-class courses, 2 provincial "course ideology and politics" demonstration courses, and 6 provincial teaching teams. The university has also established various teaching and research centers, including 2 national-level student off-campus practice education bases and 1 provincial talent cultivation model innovation demonstration area.
Since the "13th Five-Year Plan," the university has undertaken 47 national-level projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Program, National Key R&D Program, and National Natural Science Foundation projects, along with 136 provincial and ministerial-level projects, totaling over 508 million yuan in scientific research funding. It has won 64 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards. The university also houses several provincial-level key laboratories and research centers focused on coal mine deep mining and gas control, as well as centers for the sustainable development of resource cities.
The university is dedicated to strengthening international cooperation and exchanges. It has promoted cross-cultural learning interactions and expanded its international cooperation. Over the past 20 years, it has established joint education projects with Russia and Canada and has formed inter-university partnerships with 29 foreign universities.
The university has received over 20 national honors, including "National Civilized Unit," "National May 1st Labor Award," "National Advanced Collective for Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Education," and "National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee." At the provincial level, it has been awarded more than 80 honors, including "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization," "Model Civilized Unit," and "Top 10 Units for Teacher Ethics Construction."
