Henan University is a prestigious university with a long history, comprehensive academic disciplines, distinctive professional characteristics, and rich cultural heritage. It is a national "Double First-Class" university recognized for its commitment to excellence.
Founded in 1912, Henan University was initially established as the Henan Preparatory School for Overseas Study in Europe and America. The first president was Mr. Lin Boxiang. The campus was built on the site of the Henan Gongyuan (Provincial Examination Hall). The institution went through various stages, including being known as Zhongzhou University, the National Kaifeng Sun Yat-sen University (also referred to as the National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University), and the Provincial Henan University. In 1942, it was upgraded to National Henan University. In 1952, as part of the national institutional restructuring, some departments were separated to form independent institutions or merged with other universities, and the main campus was renamed Henan Normal College. The university then went through further changes, becoming Kaifeng Normal College and Henan Normal University, before restoring its name to Henan University in 1984. In October 2008, the university became part of the universities jointly constructed by the central and provincial governments. In September 2017, Henan University was selected as one of the first batch of national "Double First-Class" universities, and in February 2022, it was again included in the "Double First-Class" initiative.
Over its 112-year history, the university has adhered to the motto "Cultivate Virtue, Renew the People, and Aspire to the Highest Good," and has formed a campus culture based on the values of "Unity, Diligence, Rigor, and Simplicity," with a university spirit centered around "Perseverance and Self-improvement." It has educated over 700,000 graduates, contributing significantly to educational advancement, scientific innovation, cultural inheritance, social progress, and human civilization.
Henan University is a comprehensive, research-oriented institution with a broad array of academic disciplines. It offers 13 categories of disciplines, including Humanities, History, Philosophy, Economics, Management, Law, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, Education, Arts, and Interdisciplinary studies. The university has 40 colleges (including teaching and research departments), 93 undergraduate programs, 47 first-level master’s degree disciplines, 39 master’s degree categories, 2 doctoral degree categories, and 24 first-level doctoral degree disciplines. It also has 20 postdoctoral research stations. Thirteen of its disciplines are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI world rankings, and 82 undergraduate programs are part of the national "Double Ten Thousand Plan" for building first-class undergraduate programs.
The university has campuses in Zhengzhou (Longzi Lake Campus), Kaifeng (Minglun Campus, which is a national key cultural heritage site), and Jinming Campus, covering a total area of over 5,500 acres. It has more than 50,000 full-time students and over 4,700 faculty and staff members. Among the faculty are 6 academicians and members of academic departments, 26 national-level leading talents such as Chang Jiang Scholars, National Distinguished Young Scholars, and "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leaders, and 15 national-level young talents. The university also boasts 3 national key laboratories, 1 national field scientific observation research station, 4 Ministry of Education humanities and social science research platforms, 3 national-local joint engineering research centers, 4 provincial-level laboratories, and 5 Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture key laboratories and centers. It also operates Henan University Press and publishes 18 academic journals. Its library contains nearly 13 million volumes and documents. Henan University has established cooperative relations with over 200 universities in 40 countries and regions.
In recent years, the university has received visits and high expectations from national leaders such as Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Jiang Zemin, Jia Qinglin, Li Lanqing, Wu Guanzheng, and Li Changchun. The Henan Provincial Party Committee and Government have fully supported Henan University in improving its quality and position within the "Double First-Class" initiative, aiming to build Henan into a higher education "dual aircraft carrier."
