Henan University of Urban Construction is a multi-disciplinary provincial university that primarily focuses on engineering and features urban construction as its distinguishing characteristic. The university is located in Pingdingshan, a renowned tourist city and garden city in Henan Province, China. It is bordered to the south by Baigui Lake and to the north by Daxiang Mountain, providing a lush and tranquil environment for studying and living.
The university's origins trace back to 1983 with the establishment of Pingdingshan Urban Construction and Environmental Protection School and the Henan Branch of Wuhan University of Urban Construction in 1985. In 1993, the Henan branch of Wuhan University of Urban Construction was renamed Henan Urban Construction College of Higher Education. In 2000, the two institutions merged to form a new Henan Urban Construction College, which was upgraded to a full university in 2002 and renamed Pingdingshan Institute of Technology. In 2008, it was renamed Henan University of Urban Construction. In 2021, the university was approved as a key application-oriented undergraduate institution for the "14th Five-Year Plan" period in Henan Province. In 2024, it was authorized to award master's degrees.
The university boasts a strong engineering foundation and a distinctive urban construction focus. It offers 56 undergraduate majors, covering eight major disciplines: engineering, management, science, humanities, law, arts, economics, and agriculture. The university has 18 colleges, including the School of Civil and Traffic Engineering, School of Management, School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Energy and Building Environment Engineering, School of Surveying and Urban Spatial Information, School of Art Design, School of Computer and Data Science, School of Electrical and Control Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Engineering, School of Life Sciences and Engineering, School of Mathematics and Physics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Law, School of International Education, School of Marxism, School of Continuing Education, and Li Jia College. Henan University of Urban Construction has well-developed infrastructure, covering 1,730 acres with a total building area of 720,200 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 345 million yuan. The university has 111 teaching laboratories (centers), 11 on-campus training and internship sites, a library with 2.03 million physical books, 1.55 million electronic books, and access to 139,000 Chinese and foreign academic journals. It also has over 40 Chinese and foreign databases, including CNKI, SuperStar, Wanfang, WILEY, and EVCPX. The sports facilities, including various sports fields and gymnasiums, cover 110,800 square meters. The university employs nearly 1,600 staff members, including 1,145 full-time teachers, 378 senior faculty members, and over 1,200 faculty members with doctoral or master's degrees. The university also has 34 distinguished professors, including guest and visiting professors, and experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council.
The university emphasizes academic development and has established three national first-class undergraduate major construction points, one characteristic major, and one off-campus student practice education base. At the provincial level, it has 15 first-class undergraduate major construction points, 7 characteristic majors, 9 pilot projects for comprehensive major reform, 2 pilot projects for engineering education and talent cultivation reform, 8 experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 13 off-campus student practice bases, 3 teaching teams, 2 distinguished teachers, 16 excellent grassroots teaching organizations, 3 virtual teaching research center pilots, 6 ideological and political education teaching teams, and 2 Huang Danian-style teaching teams. The university offers two national first-class undergraduate courses, 50 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, 8 quality courses, 3 quality resource-sharing courses, 22 online open courses, 16 model ideological and political courses, and 8 virtual simulation experimental teaching projects. In recent years, the university has passed the Ministry of Education’s assessment for undergraduate teaching quality, and six of its majors—Architectural Environment and Energy Application Engineering, Engineering Management, Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Urban and Rural Planning, Civil Engineering, and Architecture—have passed evaluations by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China.
The university currently offers three master's degree programs in civil and water engineering, resources and environmental engineering, and materials and chemical engineering. It has 5 provincial key disciplines, 1 key laboratory, 1 international joint laboratory, 7 engineering technology research centers, 8 engineering research centers, and over 5 provincial-level scientific innovation platforms. The university is also home to the Henan Province Intellectual Property Management Center and the Henan Province Technology Transfer Demonstration Agency, and has won 612 scientific research awards at various levels.
The university places a strong emphasis on developing students' overall quality and innovation abilities. It implements a comprehensive credit system and offers double-degree education and college reform. Over the past three years, students have won nearly 2,300 national and provincial awards in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, including the "Internet+" and "Challenge Cup" competitions. Li Jia College has been approved as a model for the implementation of the college system reform in Henan Province. The university has established innovation and entrepreneurship platforms, including co-working spaces and student startup incubators, and has been recognized as a demonstration school for entrepreneurship education in Henan Province. The university also has a strong employment support system, with its graduates ranking high in employability within the province. It was ranked 20th among non-"211" universities in the central-south region in the MyCOS employment rankings.
The university focuses on serving the national strategy and local industry needs. It has established research institutions such as the Urban Renewal and Building Technology Research Institute, the Ecological Environment Governance Research Institute, and the New Energy and New Materials Research Institute. The university collaborates with the government, enterprises, and industry associations to develop integrated education and industry alliances and has established over 100 scientific research and innovation platforms. It works with 210 government agencies and enterprises, including the Henan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Henan Urban-Rural Planning and Design Institute, and China Pingmei Shenma Group.
The university is committed to international cooperation and has joined the China-Russia Higher Education Cooperation Alliance and the "Belt and Road" Alliance of Architecture Universities. Since 2022, it has collaborated with 30 prestigious universities from 19 countries, including Russia, the UK, the US, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. It also offers education for international students, with over 1,000 international students currently enrolled.
