Huanghe S&T College was established in 1984, with its main campus located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. It is a private undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education. The college was the first private general vocational college in China, the first private higher education institution to establish a Party Committee, and the first private institution to offer undergraduate programs. In 2008, the college successfully passed the Ministry of Education's evaluation of undergraduate teaching quality, with the expert team describing it as “shocking” and “astonishing.” In 2018, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation and was praised for its “grand vision, large-scale approach, and significant achievements.” In 2021, the college was approved as a key unit for the development of master’s degree programs in Henan Province and was selected as a key demonstration university for applied technology in the “14th Five-Year Plan” period. The college’s development history has been described by UNESCO officials as “a miracle in the history of world education,” and it has been included twice in teaching cases by the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
The college has ranked first in the comprehensive strength of private universities in China for seven consecutive years in Wu Shulian’s rankings. It has been the top private institution for four years in the Guangzhou Daily’s national applied universities rankings. The college was selected as a pilot unit for the national application-oriented university reform strategy, an educational institution under the Ministry of Education’s “Internet + China Manufacturing 2025” industry-education integration plan, and one of the first demonstration schools for applied technology in Henan Province. It has received numerous national and provincial accolades, including being named among the top 50 innovation and entrepreneurship universities in China.
The college is committed to upholding the direction of socialist education and the comprehensive leadership of the Party. It has been a pioneer in establishing a Party committee within a private university and has built a system where the Party Committee plays a core political role in major decisions. The college has developed a model of ideological and political work based on Party building and has received numerous awards, including “Advanced Collective in the National Education System” and “Model Party Branch in National Universities.”
The college boasts advanced teaching facilities, a beautiful campus, and a comprehensive campus infrastructure. It has four campuses covering nearly 3,000 acres, with over 1.1 million square meters of building space and 40% of the campus area dedicated to green space. It is recognized as an advanced unit for campus greening in Henan Province. The college has over 50 high-level teaching and research platforms, including a postdoctoral research base, key laboratories, engineering research centers, and experimental teaching demonstration centers. The school owns two affiliated hospitals, 136 specialized laboratories, and 252 off-campus training bases. Its library houses 3.87 million books, and its total value of teaching and research equipment exceeds 500 million RMB.
The college focuses on building a high-level teaching staff by introducing and nurturing top talent. It has over 2,200 staff members, nearly 50% of whom have senior professional titles. Among the young faculty members, 80% hold graduate degrees. The faculty includes over 150 high-end talents, such as academicians, distinguished scholars, national model teachers, and experts with special government allowances. The college also employs over 800 dual-qualified teachers with both academic and professional expertise.
The college closely aligns its academic programs with local industrial needs, strengthening disciplines that support regional economic transformation and industrial upgrading. It has focused on interdisciplinary integration, promoting emerging fields such as new engineering, new medical disciplines, and new liberal arts. It has nine academic departments, including engineering, arts, business, and medical sciences, offering key programs in areas like data science, intelligent systems, and network security. The college has been recognized for its support of regional economic transformation, especially in the development of information engineering and cultural creativity.
The college has earned national recognition for its innovation and entrepreneurship programs, having won numerous awards in national and provincial competitions. It has also been praised for its application-oriented talent cultivation model and its digital and pedagogical innovations, receiving multiple awards in higher education teaching.
The college actively participates in social services, including science popularization and vocational training, and has established several national and provincial-level service platforms. It plays a significant role in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation across the region and has fostered strong ties with numerous international institutions, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
