Jilin Institute of Physical Education(吉林体育学院)

Founded in 1958, Jilin Sport University is located in Changchun, Jilin Province, which is characterized by beautiful environment and four distinct seasons, and is the only sport university in Jilin Province. With overall promotion of management system reform for higher education, Jilin Province Sports School was incorporated in Jilin Sport University in 2004 based on approval of the People’s Government of Jilin Province. During approximately 60 years of its history, Jilin Sport University cultivated and provided tens of thousands of multi-level talents specializing in sports for the country and the society and thus made significant contributions to development of national and regional sports undertakings and economic and social development.

At present, the university has Nanling Campus and Linhe Campus, covering an area of 627,000 m2. There are approximately 600 teaching and administrative staff members and more than 7,000 full-time students in the university. The university has excellent staff, among which 200 teachers have senior professional titles and 70% of teachers have doctor’s degrees and master’s degrees. There are many well-known experts and scholars listed in national Millions of Talents Project, selected as State-level Famous Teachers, Young and Middle-aged Experts Making Outstanding Contributions to the Country, Experts Covered by Special Government Allowance Provided by the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China, National Model Teachers, Model Workers in China’s Educational System, Young Teachers Awarded with Fok Ying Tung Prize, Excellent Talents in the New Century, Excellent Young Physical Education Teachers in China’s Institutions of Higher Learning, Changbai Mountain Scholars, Provincial-level Senior Experts, Provincial-level Famous Teachers, Top-notch and New-type Talents at Provincial Level and Young And Middle-aged Experts Making Outstanding Contributions to Jilin Province, in addition to which a great number of teachers are appointed members of National Steering Committee for Physical Education of Institutions of Higher Learning and Review Committee of National Social Science Fund of China as well as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of various global and national sports associations (societies).

The university has authorized units which are approved to confer master’s degree for primary discipline Sports Science, master’s degree for Physical Education and master’s degree for Arts. The university has one primary discipline ranked “top priority” under key project approval of Jilin Province (including 4 secondary disciplines) and 2 provincial-level key secondary disciplines. There are 10 undergraduate majors in the university, which cover five disciplines including Pedagogy, Management, Art, Science and Law, based on which a multi-layer and multi-mode talent cultivation system is formed, which covers postgraduate education, undergraduate education, continuing education and specialized secondary education.

The university is equipped with excellent teaching and scientific research platform and has one Key Laboratories for Endurance Events under General Administration of Sport of China, one Key Laboratory of Regular Institution of Higher Learning in Jilin Province, one Key Research Base for Sports Humanities & Social Sciences under General Administration of Sport of China, one Key Research Base for Humanities & Social Sciences of Institution of Higher Learning in Jilin Province, one Research Base for Ice & Snow Culture of Jilin Province, one Key Research Base for Sports Industry of Jilin Province, one National Training Base for Social Sports Instructors and one Volunteers Training Base for Fitness Program of Jilin Province.

The university made a range of landmark achievements at the national level in the aspects of quality of undergraduate teaching and teaching reform projects, including 3 prizes for national teaching achievements and 11 prizes for teaching achievements at the provincial and ministerial level. The university has 2 state-level top-quality courses, 12 provincial and ministerial-level top-quality courses and 29 provincial-level excellent courses. In addition, 2 state-level characteristic majors, 5 provincial-level characteristic majors and 2 provincial-level branded majors were constructed by the university. Furthermore, the university constructed 5 provincial-level excellent teaching teams, 3 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers of regular institutions of higher learning and 3 innovative experimental areas for talents training mode, and one state-level top-quality textbook was chiefly edited.

The university achieved great results in various competitions, and high-level boxing, free combat, skiing, taekwondo, shooting, archery, swimming and sports dance team achieved great results in a range of national and global large-scale competitions, among which boxing team, free combat team and in-the-air skill team for freestyle skiing reached international level. Since its founding, the university has cultivated a large number of outstanding athletes, including women’s weightlifting champion Li Yajuan in World Championship, women’s speed skating champion Ye Qiaobo in World Championship and World Cup, women’s figure skating champion Chen Lu in World Championship, short track speed skating champion Li Jiajun in World Championship and World Cup, women’s boxing champion Li Jinzi in World Championship and World Cup, women’s free combat champions E Meidie and Liu Lingling in World Championship, women’s heptathlon championship Dong Yuping in Asian Athletic Championships, men’s single figure skating champion Li Chengjiang in Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, etc., and they brought honors to the country.

Significant results were made in the aspect of moral education to students, and the university was awarded the honorary title of “National Advanced Unit for Social Practices”. Significant cultural and ideological progresses were made by the university, which was evaluated and awarded the title of “National Civilized Unit”.

The university has been engaging in an increasing number of international exchanges. In recent years, the university hosted international academic conferences for many times and established friendly relationships with some institutions of higher learning and scientific research institutes in various countries and regions including the US, South Korea, Japan, France, Taiwan, etc., for which visiting teachers and students were sent and received for visiting and exchange activities.

A broad view is extending because of no wave, and the sail is hoisted and in a very good state thanks to the gentle and favorable wind. With issuance and implementation of national educational planning outline and the strategy of building China into a sports power, Jilin Sport University is facing new development opportunities and challenges.
