Kashi University is located in Kashgar, a key node of the "Belt and Road" initiative, the starting point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and the regional center of the Southern Xinjiang urban agglomeration. It is a modern, comprehensive university with a long history, a wide range of disciplines, and distinctive features, situated in the far west of China.
The university was founded in 1962 as Kashi Normal School. In 1978, it was upgraded to an undergraduate institution and renamed Kashi Teachers College. In 2003, it gained the qualification to grant master's degrees. In 2007, it received excellent results in the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation. In 2012, it was included in the Western China Higher Education Capacity Building Project. In April 2015, the university was renamed Kashi University. In June 2016, it was selected as one of the 100 pilot universities for transformation and development in China. In 1994 and 2009, it was honored by the State Council with the title of "National Model Collective for Ethnic Unity and Progress." In 2014, the university's Chinese language department also received this honor, and in 2022, it was recognized as a "Demonstration School for Ethnic Unity and Progress" in the autonomous region. In 2024, Kashi University was granted the qualification to confer doctoral degrees.
The university currently has 23 teaching units, including 1 doctoral program in education, 16 master's degree programs, and covers six major disciplines: economics, law, education, literature, science, and engineering. It offers 71 undergraduate programs across 11 disciplines, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, arts, and agriculture. The university has over 2,300 faculty and staff, and 35,000 students enrolled. It operates three campuses—Gaotai, Xinquan, and Dongcheng—covering a total area of 4,050 acres, forming the "one university, three campuses" structure.
Since its establishment, the university has adhered to the spirit of "toughness like the poplar and dedication like the red candle," and its motto, "Harmony and Tolerance, Striving for Strength." The university has trained over 130,000 professionals with solid moral character and practical expertise, particularly in basic education and various specialized fields.
Looking ahead, Kashi University aims to base itself in southern Xinjiang, deeply root itself in the border regions, serve all of Xinjiang, and extend its influence to Central Asia. It will continue its mission in teacher education, strengthen the foundational role of humanities and social sciences, expand its applied disciplines in science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, and establish a multi-disciplinary, multi-level talent cultivation system that spans bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in collaboration with government and industry. The university is dedicated to becoming a nationally renowned institution, a leading university in Xinjiang, and one with significant influence in Central Asia.
