Lanzhou Institute of Technology traces its origins to the Industrial Cooperative Movement that emerged during the Anti-Japanese War. Its predecessor was the Peili Vocational School, founded in 1942 by New Zealand international friend Louis Aili, and it became the first school in China to implement his educational philosophy of "hand and brain working together, creating and analyzing." In 1958, it was renamed Gansu Province Mechanical Manufacturing School. In 1962, it merged with five other vocational schools in coal, electricity, light industry, heavy industry, and postal services to form Gansu Industrial School. In 1974, it was renamed Lanzhou Industrial School. In 1989, it became Lanzhou Industrial Higher Vocational School. In 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and the Gansu Provincial Government to become Lanzhou Institute of Technology. Over the past 82 years, the university has developed into a leading institution in engineering, with a focus on applied education to serve local industries.
The university currently operates two campuses: the Lanzhou Qilihe campus and the Lanzhou New District campus, covering a total area of 1,784.18 acres with a building area of 824,800 square meters. In terms of research, the university is highly committed to scientific innovation and has undertaken 16 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 3 National Social Science Fund projects, in addition to over 110 provincial and ministerial research projects. It has established 16 provincial-level research platforms, including collaborative innovation centers, engineering research centers, and international science and technology cooperation bases. The university has been awarded over 170 research prizes, including patents and software copyrights.
The university has actively developed international cooperation, building strong partnerships with universities in Germany, Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Thailand, and Malaysia. It encourages student exchanges, faculty training abroad, and broad participation in international academic and cultural exchanges. The university also supports the "Belt and Road" initiative and has joined international university alliances to deepen cooperation with universities worldwide.
Furthering its inter-institutional collaboration, the university has leveraged national policies to build partnerships with top universities. In December 2022, it was included in the Ministry of Education’s plan for supporting higher education institutions in the western regions. Since then, the university has collaborated with Hefei University of Technology to improve faculty development, academic exchanges, and resource sharing. In 2023, the university signed support agreements with China University of Mining and Technology and Wuhan University of Technology.
The university strengthens its leadership under the Party and has achieved notable success in Party building, ideological work, and spiritual civilization. It has received several honors, including being recognized as a "National Advanced Vocational Education Unit," "National Civilized Unit," and "Gansu Province Red Gene Inheritance Demonstration School."
