Ludong University is a comprehensive university that offers a balanced range of engineering, agriculture, natural sciences, and humanities disciplines, with a focus on applied subjects. In 2012, it became one of the institutions selected for the national special talent program for doctoral candidates. In 2014, it was approved to establish a postdoctoral research station in education. In 2016, it was selected as a national demonstration base for the joint training of master’s degree students in education. In 2017, it was recognized as a national model university for innovation and entrepreneurship and a national base for innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education. In 2020, it was identified as a high-level university and a high-level discipline development university by Shandong Province. In 2022, it was selected as a cultivation and creation unit for Shandong Province’s model universities for Party building work.
The university was founded in 1930 and has gone through various historical stages, including Shandong Provincial Second Rural Normal School, Jiaodong Public School, Jiaodong Normal School, Laiyang Normal School, Laiyang Normal College, Yantai Normal College, and Yantai Normal University. It has always been aligned with the great cause of the Chinese nation's struggle for independence, freedom, democracy, and prosperity, nurturing the motto of “Virtue, Scholarship, Innovation, and Practice,” the school spirit of “Pursue Excellence, Seek Practical Application,” and the quality culture of “Rigorous, Lean, and Excellent.” The university has formed a unique educational style that integrates interdisciplinary research to serve national strategic needs and support regional economic and social development. In 2001, it merged with the former Shandong Provincial Transportation School. In 2006, it was renamed Ludong University.
The university is located in Yantai, one of the first coastal open cities in China, with beautiful surroundings by the mountains and the sea. It is a model unit for national greening, a Shandong Province green school, and a Shandong Province smart education demonstration school. The campus covers an area of 3,450 acres, with a total building area of 748,000 square meters and fixed assets worth 2.59 billion yuan, including teaching and research equipment worth 583 million yuan. The library holds 2.578 million books and 1.203 million types of e-books. The university has more than 30,000 full-time students.
The university upholds the principle of discipline-based development and has implemented a strategy to build strengths in specific fields. It has developed five advantage disciplines, including water resources, environmental and marine sciences, chips and integrated circuits, food, medicine, and modern agriculture, teacher education, and cultural heritage and communication. It has 24 schools, 1 postdoctoral research station, 1 doctoral talent cultivation program for national special needs, 23 first-level master's programs, 23 professional master’s degrees, and 13 key provincial disciplines. The school’s engineering, chemistry, materials science, environmental and ecological science, agricultural science, and biology disciplines are ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI rankings, with engineering ranking in the top 5‰ globally. Five disciplines, including hydraulic engineering, education, geography, Chinese language and literature, and foreign language and literature, have been selected for the 2024 Soft Science China’s best discipline rankings. Hydraulic engineering has been selected for the provincial "high-level discipline" project, making it the only discipline in the province to be designated as an "advantageous and characteristic discipline."
The university is committed to the fundamental task of cultivating morality and talent. It has continuously improved its quality assurance system for education and teaching, with steadily improving talent cultivation quality. In 2007, the university's undergraduate teaching was rated as "excellent" by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it became one of the first universities in Shandong Province to be recognized for its distinctive application-oriented talent cultivation. In 2017, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching assessment. In 2019, it passed the Shandong Province aesthetic education and physical education assessments. In 2021, it was selected as a construction unit for Shandong Province’s application-oriented undergraduate universities. In 2022, it was approved to establish the Shandong Province ideological and political education demonstration center for curriculum teaching. Currently, the university offers 57 undergraduate programs and has 14 national-level first-class undergraduate programs, 5 national-level characteristic programs, 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot program, 1 national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national-level student practice education base, 17 provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs, 3 provincial-level excellence engineering programs, 15 provincial-level brand specialty programs, and numerous other honors and achievements.
The university adheres to innovation as its primary driving force and has significantly improved its research capabilities. It has established a well-organized system of innovation platforms, with 21 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, including the National Grass Variety Regional Test Station, National Language and Literature Promotion Base, National Research Center for Chinese Dictionaries, and many others in fields such as marine space launch technology, energy conversion, environmental control in aquaculture, and educational research on youth correction. In 2023, the university initiated 45 national-level research projects, with 14 provincial-level scientific and technological achievements.
The university adheres to talent development as the foundation of its strength. The teaching staff has been significantly improved, with nearly 2,000 full-time teachers, including 269 full professors, 653 associate professors, and 71 experts with national-level talent titles. The talent teams are continually being strengthened, with 1 national-level teaching team and many other provincial-level teams. The university emphasizes ethical and professional teaching conduct and has established a teacher ethics training base. Many faculty members have won prestigious national and provincial awards for their contributions.

It has made significant contributions to regional development and received numerous honors for its technological innovation and research achievements.
The university is also highly internationalized, with partnerships in over 30 countries and regions and more than 150 partner institutions. It offers joint degree programs, student exchange programs, and other international initiatives, and is actively involved in China's outward expansion strategy.
“Educating talents for the benefit of the world” is the founding belief of Ludong University. With a history of 94 years, the university has produced more than 320,000 outstanding graduates. Its alumni include famous figures such as Zhang Wei, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association, and Yang Anren, recipient of the "May Fourth Youth Medal," among many other prominent individuals.
