Tangshan Normal University is a provincial public full-time general undergraduate higher education institution in Hebei Province, and it is among the first batch of key supported institutions selected for the Ministry of Education's Normal Education Collaborative Quality Improvement Plan. The university's predecessor was Tangshan Accelerated Normal Junior College, founded in 1956. It was upgraded to an undergraduate university with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2000, and was granted the right to confer master's degrees in 2024. The university has successively been awarded titles such as "National Excellent Normal Junior College," "Civilized Campus of Hebei Province," "National Typical Experience University for Graduate Employment," "Featured School for National Defense Education," and "National Excellent May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee."
Located in the High-tech Development Zone of Tangshan City, Hebei Province, the university is divided into the Daxuedao Campus, Xueyuanlu Campus, and Jianshelu Campus. It covers an area of 793,370 square meters, with a building area of 497,630 square meters. It currently has 1,082 full-time teachers. Among them, 97 hold senior professional titles, 476 hold associate senior titles or above, and 281 hold doctoral degrees. There are 40 high-level talents at or above the provincial and ministerial level, 1 expert enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, 1 excellent expert managed by the province, 1 top-notch talent (professional and technical) of Hebei Province, 35 candidates in the second and third tiers of Hebei Province's "333 Talent Project," and 13 individuals honored as Outstanding Teachers of Hebei Province, Model of Teachers' Ethics of Hebei Province, Famous Teachers of Hebei Province, and Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents of Hebei Province. The university currently has over 18,000 students enrolled, including more than 9,000 normal (teacher-training) students.
The university adheres to its main responsibility and primary focus on teacher training, taking the provision of high-quality teacher education as its first duty. Upholding the tradition of "diligent thinking and dedicated studying, cultivating morality and self-discipline," it has formed a school ethos of "unity of knowledge and action, extending great love to others," a teaching style of "being a good teacher and helpful friend, inheriting traditions and innovating," and a study style of "calming the mind and broadening the horizons." It has cultivated a group of national outstanding teachers, Hebei provincial backbone principals, and Hebei provincial outstanding teachers, represented by Wang Limin, Wu Ruijun, Cui Jiansheng, Xu Yanzhong, and Wei Jiancheng. The university focuses on inner-core development, continuously improving its disciplinary and professional layout. It currently has 16 teaching units and 52 undergraduate enrollment majors, covering 10 disciplines: literature, science, law, economics, history, education, management, agriculture, arts, and engineering. Among them, there are 17 teacher-training majors covering four categories: preschool education, primary education, secondary education, and special education. Fifteen majors have been approved by the Ministry of Education for exemption from the primary and secondary school teacher qualification examination for their normal students. It possesses 1 national excellent resource-sharing course for teacher education, 1 national-level first-class undergraduate course, 8 provincial-level excellent courses, 4 provincial-level excellent online open courses, 10 provincial-level first-class undergraduate project construction courses, 4 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration courses, 15 provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship project construction courses, 1 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration center, 13 provincial-level first-class undergraduate majors, 1 provincial-level first-class undergraduate major construction point, 1 provincial brand characteristic major, and 1 provincial modern industrial college. In the past five years, it has won 1 first prize and 1 second prize for provincial teaching achievements.
The university focuses on talent cultivation, with the effectiveness of fostering virtue through education continuously evident. The university continually optimizes the cultivation model for applied talents and creates and refines professional practice platforms, resulting in significant improvements in students' professional levels, practical skills, and overall quality. Over the past three years, the employment rate of graduates has exceeded 90%, and the postgraduate admission rate is 15%. In 2018, it won outstanding results of 1 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals in the "Create Youth" National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition. In 2019, it won the second prize in the 16th "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, the gold prize in the 4th Chinese Youth Volunteer Service Public Welfare Entrepreneurship Competition, and 2 gold and 8 bronze prizes in the 5th Hebei Province "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, ranking at the forefront among similar institutions in the province. In 2025, the project "Rhythmic Nurturing of the Soul" won the grand prize of the provincial "Challenge Cup"; the "Researching Hebei" initiative won 13 provincial awards, achieving a new breakthrough with 1 grand prize; and the play Spring Comes Inn by the Xinlv Drama Club was shortlisted for the Beijing "Golden Hedgehog" College Student Theatre Festival. The university has been awarded the National Outstanding Project Office for the Western Region Development Program for six consecutive years, and students have won more than 200 awards at or above the provincial level in competitions. The university strives to build a brand for government-funded normal students. Since 2019, it has recruited a cumulative total of 1,906 government-funded normal students, ranking among the top in the province. The recruitment results for the 2025 class of government-funded normal students are gratifying, with a substantial improvement in the minimum score rankings. The highest admission score was 631, with 27 candidates scoring over 600.
The university focuses on technological innovation, with its level of scientific research continuously improving. It has established the Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Plant Biotechnology Research and Application, the Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Degradable Polymers, as well as 12 municipal key laboratories and 7 municipal basic innovation teams. It also hosts the Ministry of Education's "Chinese Excellent Culture Heritage Base - Pingju," the Teaching and Research Base of the Chinese Li Dazhao Research Association, the Provincial Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, the Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Research Base, the Provincial Undergraduate Education Innovation Highland, the Provincial University Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Cultivation Base, the Provincial Junior High School Teacher Education Research Center, the Provincial Higher Education Application Technology R&D Center, the Provincial Eastern Hebei Cultural Heritage and Innovation Research Base, and the Provincial Integrated Lesson Preparation Center for Ideological and Political Courses in Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Schools. In 2022, it jointly established an organosilicon laboratory with Sanyou Group and collaborated with the Municipal Food and Drug Testing Center to carry out national-level research projects and applications. The supporting role of scientific research in teaching is becoming increasingly apparent. Over the past three years, it has won 4 scientific research awards at or above the provincial level, published 232 high-level papers in SCI, EI, CSSCI, SSCI, and CSCD journals, published 11 monographs, obtained 74 invention patents and 79 utility model patents, and been approved for 24 research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial levels.
The university focuses on collaborative development, continuously enhancing its strategic service capabilities. Closely aligning with local economic and social development, the university cooperates closely with various counties and districts, as well as dozens of enterprises and institutions. They co-build institutes such as the Artificial Intelligence Education Robot Research Institute and laboratories in fields like big data and new materials, jointly conducting scientific research and talent cultivation to achieve integrated development among government, university, and enterprise. The university has established Tangshan's first applied marine college, providing professional talents in marine biology, marine science, and marine logistics for Tangshan's maritime development.
The university focuses on open education, continuously expanding domestic and international exchanges and cooperation. The university signed a cooperation framework agreement with Southwest Jiaotong University, and in September 2024, the two universities achieved their first collaborative undergraduate training. Promoting the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, it signed strategic cooperation agreements with Beijing International Studies University and Tianjin Normal University, and established cooperative relations with 24 enterprises in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Strengthening Sino-foreign cultural exchanges, the university conducts project cooperation and friendly exchanges with dozens of foreign institutions, has been approved for the ISEC program, and has achieved mutual credit recognition with 41 renowned overseas universities in 6 countries: the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hungary.
