Chinese short story
-

A Fishing Rod and a Basket of Fish

Once upon a time, two men got lost in the woods. They were very hungry. On the road, they encountered a kind old man. Seeing that they were about to starve, the old man gave one of them a fishing rod and the other a basket of fresh fish. The two men thanked the old man and, carrying his gifts, went their separate ways.

The man who received the basket of fish stayed put. He gathered some dry wood, made a fire, and cooked the fish. He devoured the fish hungrily, and in no time, ate all seven or eight fish. Though he smiled in satisfaction, he ate too much and eventually died from overstuffing beside the basket.

The other man, carrying the fishing rod, continued walking in hunger, step by step, toward the river. After three days, when he finally saw the river in the distance, he was completely exhausted. Too tired and hungry, he died by the riverside without ever casting his rod.

Three years later, another two hungry men got lost in the forest. They encountered the same old man, who gave one a fishing rod and the other a basket of fresh fish. However, unlike the first two, these men decided to search for the river together. They cooked one fish at a time and, after a long journey, reached the river just as they finished the last fish in the basket. They began living by fishing.

A few weeks later, after preparing enough food, they worked together and finally found their way home, returning safely to their respective houses.

If one only focuses on immediate gains, what they obtain will only bring short-lived happiness. If one has lofty goals but ignores the realities of life, they might not survive the journey. Only by combining ideals with practical realities can one succeed.
