When my son was in the third year of junior high school, his father passed away. After his father died, his personality changed greatly, and his academic performance became worse day by day. I tried all kinds of ways to help him, but the more I wanted to help him, the farther he drifted away from me. He was unwilling to talk to me.

By the end of the semester, he had already missed ninety-five classes, and he had failed his physics, chemistry, and foreign language exams. From the way things looked, it was very possible that he would not even be able to graduate from junior high school. I was very worried and tried all sorts of methods, but neither criticism nor praise worked. He remained the same as before.

One day, while I was at work, I suddenly received a phone call. A man said he was a counselor from the school: “I’d like to talk with you about Zhang Liang’s absences.”

I told this stranger all about my worries and my love for my son. Finally, I said, “I love my son, but I don’t know what to do. Seeing him like that makes me very sad. I have tried every way I can think of to make him like school again, but… sigh, none of it has worked. I have no solution anymore.”

After I finished speaking, there was no reply from the other end of the phone. After a while, the teacher said, “Thank you for taking the time to talk with me.” Then he hung up.

When my son’s next report card arrived, I was happy to see that he had made great progress in his studies.

A year passed, and my son entered high school. At a parent-teacher meeting, the teacher praised his progress.

On the way home, my son asked me, “Mom, do you still remember the counselor who called you a year ago?” I nodded.

“That was me,” my son said. “At first, I just wanted to play a joke on you, but after hearing what you said, I felt very sad. Only then did I realize how difficult it had been for you after Dad passed away. I made up my mind that I must become someone you can be proud of.”
