Xiangtan Institute of Technology (XTIT) is located in the Jiuhua Economic Development Zone of Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, at the central hub of the Chang-Zhu-Tan Greater West River Science and Innovation Corridor. It is the first independently established undergraduate institution in Hunan Province, approved by the Ministry of Education, and a joint training unit for postdoctoral research in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and Geely Group.
Historical Background
The predecessor of XTIT was the Beijin College of Hunan University of Commerce, founded in 2001. Initially located in the historic Beijin City, a scenic area along the Xiang River and a significant site in the history of the Western Han Dynasty, the college benefitted from a rich cultural backdrop.
In 2018, with support from the Hunan Provincial Government and under the Ministry of Education's regulations, Hunan University of Commerce collaborated with Geely Group to establish Beijin College. In 2019, the Xiangtan Campus was completed and officially opened in September, welcoming its first cohort of students. By June 2020, the Ministry of Education approved the college's transformation into an independently established undergraduate institution, renaming it Xiangtan Institute of Technology as a private, non-profit university.
Campus and Academics
Spanning a planned area of 1,200 acres, XTIT currently houses seven disciplinary fields, including science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature, and arts, and offers 38 undergraduate programs. The university has an enrollment of nearly 10,000 students and recruits students from 17 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China.
Innovative Educational Approach
XTIT emphasizes the holistic development of students. In the fall of 2021, the university established Tanzhou Academy, dedicated to studying, researching, and promoting Huxiang culture while exploring a residential college model for student management. The academy integrates the CFAP (Competence, Foundation, Application, Practice) applied talent cultivation model to strengthen general education. By incorporating traditional culture, it aims to nurture future leaders with the ability to take on significant responsibilities in the new era.
Vision and Future Development
At this new historical juncture, XTIT prioritizes character development and education as its core mission. Guided by the strategic goals of serving the real economy and contributing to China's "Two Centenary Goals," the university draws on the experiences and management practices of world-class institutions such as Caltech and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
XTIT is characterized by its focus on industry-education integration, aligning with strategic emerging industries and emphasizing New Engineering and New Business disciplines. By staying at the forefront of industrial and technological innovation, XTIT strives to become a modern, international applied university with robust academic reputation, outstanding research capabilities, and high-quality education standards.
