Establishment and History:
Changsha University was founded in 1970, tracing its origins to the Changsha Municipal Revolutionary Committee Teacher Training Class in November 1970, Changsha Basic University in July 1978, and Changsha University in May 1983. In 2004, the former Changsha University (a junior college) was upgraded to a full-time public undergraduate institution, operating under a governance system of joint provincial-municipal management, with Changsha City as the primary administrator.
The university is authorized to confer master’s degrees and has been recognized as a part of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan for Industry-Education Integration Development. It is a national innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration base and a key provincial institution with distinctive applied disciplines. Ranked as a first-tier undergraduate admission institution in Hunan Province, it has been recognized as a “Civilized University” in Hunan.
In the 2024 Shanghai Ranking of Chinese Universities, Changsha University ranked 334th among over 1,200 undergraduate institutions nationwide.
Location and Campus:
Situated in Changsha, a historic and cultural city known as the "City of Media Arts" and a key urban center in the Yangtze River basin, the university is located in the core area of Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Park, a national cultural industry demonstration zone. The campus spans over 1,975 acres, with a building area of approximately 506,200 square meters. It houses teaching and research equipment valued at 269 million RMB and a library with 1.624 million volumes. The scenic campus, designated as a “Hunan Provincial Garden Unit,” is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful university campuses in China. Conveniently located, it is 10 kilometers from Changsha Railway Station, 15 kilometers from Changsha South High-Speed Railway Station, and 25 kilometers from Changsha Huanghua International Airport, with direct metro access.
Disciplines and Programs:
The university actively integrates into regional economic and social development, emphasizing applied engineering while fostering the synergy of creative and modern service disciplines. It offers 52 undergraduate programs through 16 colleges and holds three master’s degree programs in Electronic Information, Biology and Medicine, and Drama and Film Studies. There are 11 national-level first-class undergraduate programs, 20 provincial-level programs, and several provincial and national features and reform pilot projects.
Faculty and Staff:
Changsha University employs over 1,210 staff, including more than 110 professors and 310 associate professors, with 460 holding doctoral degrees. The university boasts over 20 experts awarded national and provincial honors, including recipients of the State Council’s special government allowance, national teaching awards, and distinguished talent programs.
Talent Cultivation:
Focused on its mission to nurture virtuous and skilled professionals, the university offers education to over 17,200 full-time undergraduates and has co-trained over 600 postgraduate students. It collaborates with over 200 enterprises, including Sany Heavy Industry and Zoomlion, achieving remarkable results in talent cultivation. Since 2020, the university has been admitting students in the first-tier undergraduate batch in Hunan Province, with a growing number of high-performing students. Graduates consistently achieve high employment rates, with the university recognized as an outstanding institution for employment and entrepreneurship for four consecutive terms in Hunan Province.
Research:
The university hosts 30 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, including key laboratories and research centers. Since 2010, it has secured 2,595 research projects with a funding total of 230 million RMB, including 186 national-level projects. It has earned 48 provincial and ministerial research awards, one national-level humanities and social sciences award, and 368 authorized national invention patents.
Community Service:
Dedicated to supporting regional development, Changsha University has partnered with local enterprises and institutions on over 521 projects in the past five years, generating direct economic benefits exceeding 7 billion RMB. It established the Malanshan New Media College in collaboration with local media industries and contributes significantly to the integration of culture and technology.
Global Exchange:
The university emphasizes internationalization, collaborating with over 50 institutions across 20 countries and regions. It participates in global initiatives such as the Belt and Road and hosts international platforms, including UNESCO's International Center for Space Technologies.
Future Vision:
Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Changsha University aims to align with Hunan’s "Three Highs and Four New" blueprint and contribute to Changsha's development as a global research hub. It is committed to becoming a distinctive, high-level regional university.
