Changzhi Medical College(长治医学院)

Founding and Development:
Founded in 1946, Changzhi Medical College originated as the Nursing School of the Bethune International Peace Hospital under the Jin-Ji-Lu-Yu Military Region. It was established under the care of revolutionary leaders such as Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping and was personally founded by Dr. He Mu, then director of Yan’an Central Hospital. It is one of the earliest medical schools established by the Communist Party of China.
In 1948, it was restructured into the Bethune International Peace Medical College, renamed Shanxi Provincial Changzhi Medical College in July 1950, and became Jin-Dong-Nan Medical College in 1958. Upgraded to an undergraduate institution in 1986, it was renamed Changzhi Medical College. The college passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation in 1996 and 2004. In 2011, it became a pilot unit for training clinical medicine postgraduate students. In 2012, it became the first similar institution in China to pass the Ministry of Education's clinical medicine accreditation. In 2021, it was officially recognized as a master's degree-granting institution, with master's programs in Clinical Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

Since its establishment, the college has upheld its red revolutionary heritage, maintained its mission of serving society, and adhered to its founding principles of prioritizing ethics and grassroots service. The college emphasizes quality, practice, and distinctive features, embodying the spirit of "Virtue, Skill, Service to the Nation," and has trained over 80,000 outstanding medical professionals for society.

Academic Structure and Programs:
The college has developed a multidisciplinary structure integrating Medicine, Engineering, Arts, Science, Management, and Art, with a multi-level education system encompassing postgraduate, undergraduate, and continuing education. It comprises 22 schools and departments, offering 22 undergraduate majors. Currently, the college has 15,236 students, including 690 master’s degree candidates, 13,620 undergraduates, and 926 continuing education students.
The college spans 757.13 acres across two campuses (Main Campus and Wulong Campus) with a building area of 381,800 square meters. Its fixed assets total 896.4 million RMB, including teaching and research equipment valued at 206.85 million RMB.

Faculty and Staff:
The college employs 965 staff members, including 648 full-time teachers, 242 senior-level faculty, and 593 with master’s degrees or higher, of whom 200 hold doctoral degrees. The college has a distinguished faculty, including one “Yangtze River Scholar,” six recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, eight provincial teaching masters, 13 leaders under Shanxi’s "1331" project, and 25 "San Jin Talents."

Programs and Achievements:
The college boasts two national first-class undergraduate programs, four provincial specialty programs, and seven provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites. Its Clinical Medicine program is a pilot reform project under the Ministry of Education's “Undergraduate Teaching Engineering.”
The college has established five affiliated hospitals and collaborates with 130 teaching practice bases. It was among the first batch of institutions approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health for the “Excellence in Doctor Education and Training Program.”

Research and Innovation:
Changzhi Medical College leads key innovation efforts in clinical medicine and interdisciplinary research. It is home to Shanxi’s "1331 Project" teams, innovation centers, and industry-aligned research clusters. Over the past five years, it has undertaken 1,000 research projects, including 453 national and provincial projects, publishing over 3,600 papers (nearly 1,000 indexed by SCI) and authoring over 200 academic works.
