Mianyang City University, formerly known as the Southwest University of Science and Technology City College, was established in 2006 as a general undergraduate institution approved by the State Council's educational administrative departments. It was jointly founded by Southwest University of Science and Technology and Hefei Wanbo Social Undertaking Development Group Co., Ltd. In 2012, the institution was granted the qualification to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2021, it was officially approved by the Ministry of Education to be renamed as Mianyang City University.
The university is located in Mianyang, China's only Science and Technology City, in Sichuan Province. It currently has two campuses, Anzhou and Youxian, with a planned area of 1,200 acres and a total constructed and planned building area of nearly 630,000 square meters. The university has more than 23,000 students and a highly qualified faculty.
The university adheres to the educational philosophy of "Those with educational ideals should run ideal education and cultivate people with ideal pursuits." With a focus on "serving students' lifelong development," the university has been continuously advancing its "3331" talent cultivation model reform, which includes "three stages of development, relying on three major platforms, constructing three types of curriculum systems, and completing one key feature construction." This model aims to cultivate students into application-oriented talents who are "idealistic, specialized, and versatile."
The university has 4 professional colleges, 1 industry college (which includes departments for vocational education research, lifelong education, entrepreneurial center, Chinese medicine health projects, CFEC projects, future business projects, and international education), 1 entrepreneurship college, and the Marxism College. The university offers 70 undergraduate and associate degree programs across various disciplines, including engineering, economics, management, literature, science, education, arts, and sports. The university currently has 3 "first-class undergraduate programs" at the provincial level, 13 first-class undergraduate courses, 4 application-oriented demonstration professional projects, 2 comprehensive reform programs, 4 key specialized professional quality improvement programs, 2 provincial-level comprehensive reform programs, and 1 special program for private universities in Sichuan. Among these, the Surveying and Mapping Engineering program ranks first in Sichuan province among similar institutions. The university also has 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 8 provincial-level courses incorporating ideological education, and 2 provincial-level demonstration teaching teams. It has received approval for 14 first-class (specialized) demonstration programs and 21 first-class (application-oriented) demonstration courses at the provincial level, as well as 15 industry-university cooperation projects approved by the Ministry of Education.
The university continually deepens the integration of industry and education through school-enterprise cooperation. It has built industry colleges and entrepreneurship colleges with well-known domestic enterprises, offering "order classes" and establishing over 120 internship and training bases both inside and outside the university. In 2019, the university’s achievements in "industry-education integration and school-enterprise cooperation" were showcased at the China Private Education Association Annual Conference. In 2020, the university's "BIM Technology-Based Architectural Environment and Energy Application Engineering Practice Base" school-enterprise cooperation project was selected as an excellent case in the "School-Enterprise Cooperation Double Hundred Plan" at the China Higher Education Expo (HEEC) and was presented in a live roadshow in Changsha. In 2023, the university's Energy Dynamics discipline was approved for the "Double First-Class" Gongga Program cultivation in Sichuan.
The university always insists on the fundamental task of moral education and has become the first private undergraduate institution in Sichuan to be included in the "All-round Education" comprehensive reform pilot program. It is also a key institution for Party building in Sichuan higher education. The university has received numerous honors, including "Civilized Campus" in Sichuan, "Advanced Unit for Targeted Poverty Alleviation in Sichuan Universities," "Advanced Unit for College Students' Military Recruitment Work," "National Excellent Project Management Office" in the Western Plan, and has been recognized by well-known domestic media as one of the most influential independent colleges. Since its establishment, the university has trained over 20,000 application-oriented technical professionals, and it has been recognized as an advanced unit in graduate employment for several consecutive years. Both employment rates and the number of graduates starting their own businesses have been steadily increasing.
