Gansu Institute of Political Science and Law is a provincial public university in Gansu Province, with a strong focus on law, as well as other disciplines such as management, engineering, literature, economics, and arts. It is one of the earliest established provincial law schools in China. The university is a key institution for the education and cultivation of excellent legal talents and is a national leader in law and legal education. It is also a member of several prestigious national educational networks, including the "Standing League of National Political and Law Schools" and the "Law Education Innovation Alliance."

The university's origins trace back to 1956, when it was founded as the Gansu Provincial Political and Law Cadre School. It initially operated at No. 4 Ziyou Road in Lanzhou and was renamed in 1969 to the Gansu Provincial Revolutionary Committee Beiwang Wuqiqi Cadre School. In 1984, the institution officially became Gansu Institute of Political Science and Law and moved to Anning West Road in Lanzhou, offering regular higher education. In 2006, it became authorized to award master's degrees, and in 2007, it began offering graduate programs. In 2017, the school started enrolling international students and was later approved for doctoral degree programs in 2024. The university was officially renamed Gansu Institute of Political Science and Law in June 2019 and was granted doctoral degree authorization in 2024.

The university adheres to the motto "Cultivate Virtue, Clarify the Law, Uphold Integrity, and Serve the Public." It has nurtured over 130,000 graduates who have contributed significantly to the development of legal and political systems across the nation. Its alumni serve in various government and legal departments, from the southern to the northern borders of China, and from sea level to the highest peaks of the world. Many of its graduates, with their strong patriotism and determination, have earned the title of "Gansu Political and Border Defenders."

The university has excellent facilities, with campuses located in Lanzhou at Anning West Road and in the Lanzhou New District. It occupies a total area of 1,066.59 acres, with a building area of 452,300 square meters. The library holds more than 1.57 million physical books and 895,800 electronic books, and the university has a total value of over 114 million RMB in various teaching and research equipment. There are 15 schools and colleges, and the university enrolls students from all 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China. It currently has over 14,000 full-time students, including more than 12,000 undergraduates, over 2,000 graduate students, 100 preparatory students, and 26 international students.

The university offers 40 undergraduate majors, with 4 national first-class undergraduate programs and 10 provincial first-class programs. It has 5 first-level master's degree programs, including Law, Business Administration, Cyberspace Security, Marxist Theory, and National Security Studies, as well as 19 second-level master’s programs and 10 professional master’s programs. It is also home to 3 provincial first-class disciplines, including Law (a leading discipline in Gansu Province), Evidence Science, and Business Administration, and 8 provincial key disciplines.

The university is committed to open education and actively promotes international and domestic cooperation. It has established partnerships with more than 30 international universities, including the University of Wolverhampton (UK), the University of Central Oklahoma (USA), the University of Vermont Law School (USA), St. Petersburg University (Russia), Moscow State Law University (Russia), Belarusian State University, the National University of Kazakhstan, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and the University of Sydney (Australia). Domestically, it collaborates with universities such as Jilin University, Qingdao University, and the People's Armed Police Force Academy, and has a cooperative support relationship with China University of Political Science and Law. It is also a founding member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Law Schools Alliance.

The university has a high-quality faculty team, with 59.03% of teachers holding senior academic titles and 93.73% holding doctoral or master's degrees. Among the faculty, there are experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, a national outstanding teacher, and several members of national and provincial talent programs, such as the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education and the "Flying Scholars" program in Gansu Province.

The university also boasts strong research capabilities, with 17 provincial and ministerial research platforms and 67 university-level research institutions. Over the past five years, the university has undertaken 140 research projects above the provincial level, including 27 national social science and natural science projects. It has received 41 provincial and national research awards, including six first prizes for excellence in Gansu Provincial Social Science.

In terms of research output, the university publishes two academic journals, Gansu Institute of Political Science and Law Journal and Western Law Review, with the former being included in the CSSCI Extended Edition.

The university plays a significant role in supporting regional economic and social development, legal reform, and national strategic goals, particularly those related to the Belt and Road Initiative. Its research centers and labs, such as those for Evidence Science, Judicial Appraisal, Criminal Psychology, and Public Security in Gansu, contribute to the practical application and transformation of research achievements in legal reform and security in Gansu Province.

Guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the university is committed to improving its undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral education. It focuses on the development of new disciplines in both the humanities and sciences, fostering interdisciplinary development, and aligning with national and regional needs. The goal is to become a leading law university in the western region, with a significant national influence and recognition in countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt.
