HanshanNormal University (hereinafter referred to as "the University"or HSNU) was established in the 29th year of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1903) as "Huizhou-Chaozhou-Jieyang Normal School." Its predecessor dates back to the "HanshanAcademy" founded by the people of Chaozhou during the Song Dynasty to commemorate Han Yu, a great literary figure of the Tang Dynasty who once served as the governor of Chaozhou. It is one of the firstnationwideand the first in Guangdong to specialize in training teachers. The University was renamed Guangdong Provincial Second Normal School in 1921, Guangdong ProvincialHanshanNormal School in 1935,HanshanNormal School in 1949, andHanshanNormal College in 1958. In 1993, it was approved by the State Education Commission to upgrade to an undergraduate institution and renamedHanshanNormal University.Now it is a provincial undergraduate normal university with a long history and distinctive features in Guangdong Province.
The University is located in the national historical and cultural city of Chaozhou, known as the "Porcelain Capital of China." Over a century offoundinghistory has shaped its motto "Diligent in teaching and learning, setting an example for others," and the characteristics ofHanshanNormal University people, which include "patriotic and local sentiments, the spirit of teaching and imparting knowledge, the pursuit of truth and integrity in scholarship, and the noble and enterprising spirit." These characteristics highlight the distinctive feature of "acentennial rootin Chaozhoufor cultivation of teaching talents." Alumni are spread both domestically and internationally, and many outstanding figures have emerged, such as the master of Chinese studiesJao Tsung-I, the master of Lingnan poetry Zhan Antai, the first president of Sun Yat-sen University Zou Lu, the famous philosopher Chen Weishi, the international photography master Chen Fuli, the patriotic industrialist Chen Wai Namfrom Hong Kong, the Malaysian industrialist Lim Jin Hua, the Thai industrialist Chen Han Shi, the famous calligraphy educator Chen Qi Quan from the Taiwan region, the recipient of the Republic Medal and the father of China's nuclear submarine Huang Xu Hua, and the National First-Class Hero Model of the People's Police Zhu Mingjian. In particular, the University has provided a large number of excellent teachers and other talents for Guangdong and surrounding provinces, making significant contributions to local education and economic and social development.
The University covers an area of 987,000 square meters with a construction area of 465,100 square meters. It has 17 secondary colleges, including the School of Literature and News Communication, and the Guangdong Ceramic Vocational Technical School, offering 60 undergraduate programs covering 9 disciplines such as Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Management, and Art. It has 4 provincial key disciplines, 3 provincial "Strengthen and Supplement" key disciplines, 3 national characteristic specialties and comprehensive reform pilot programs, 10 provincial first-class specialty construction points, 23 provincial characteristic specialties, comprehensive reform pilot programs, and applied talent training demonstration specialties, 7 specialties certified by IEEE, 5 specialties such as Chemistry, Biological Science, History, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Physical Education certified by the Ministry of Education for teacher education specialty secondary certification, 2 provincial talent training model innovation experimental zones, 1 provincial collaborative education platform, 4 provincial industrial colleges, 13 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 22 university student training bases, 53 provincial exemplary teacher education practice bases, 15 provincial quality video public courses andhigh-quality resource sharing courses.It also has 5 provincial-level open online courses, 2 provincial-level series of open online courses, and 36 provincial-level first-class courses. The school recruits students from 14 provinces (regions) and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, with a total of 24,047 full-time students (including Chaozhou Normal College). In recent years, it has also jointly cultivated graduate students with universities such as Yunnan University, Central China Normal University, South China Normal University, Hunan University of Technology, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou Sports College, Guangzhou University, Shenzhen University, and Jilin Sports University.In addition, the University’s adult higher education offers 22 majors including Chinese Language and Literature, Applied Mathematics, English, Ideological and Political Education, Law, Preschool Education, and Culinary Arts and Nutrition, with nearly 6200 students.
Our University has more than 1600 faculty and staff, with a well-structured and high-level team of teachers. More than 80% of the full-time teachers have a master's degree or above, and 30% have a senior professional and technical title. The proportion of teachers with a doctoral degree exceeds 30%. We have implemented talent programs such as "Hanjiang Scholar" and "Han Mountain Master", and has employed a group of well-known domestic and foreign experts and scholars such as Chen Pingyuan (a Professor of Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking University) and Xue Eryong (a professor of Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University) as consulting professors, visiting professors, part-time professors, and leading academic figures. Our University has established "Master Studios" and invited intangible cultural heritage inheritors such as ceramic sculpture masters and Chaozhou Cuisine master chefs to teach, promoting students' practical ability and inheriting excellent traditional culture.
The University has excellent educational conditions. It has a multi-functional information-based library with an area of nearly 30,000 square meters, with 2.364 million paper books and 1.1455 million electronic books. We are the "China - Chaozhou Cuisine Research and Talent Training Base", and the construction unit of the Chaozhou branch center of the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Chemistry and Fine Chemical Engineering (ceramic materials, food science and technology); we have 23 provincial-level scientific research platforms including the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department Key Laboratory, Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department Engineering Technology Research Center, Guangdong Provincial Social Science Federation Research Base, Guangdong Provincial Social Science Federation Decision-making Consulting Research Base, Guangdong Provincial General College Humanities and Social Science Key Research Base, Guangdong Provincial General College Key Laboratory, Guangdong Local Characteristic Culture Research Base, and the first batch of Guangdong Provincial Colleges and Universities Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Heritage Base; we have built 4 scientific research platforms funded by the central financial special funds, including the Eastern Guangdong Analysis and Testing Center, New Functional Materials and Their Application Technology Research Platform, Chaoshan Intangible Cultural Heritage Database Research and Development Center, and Advanced Ceramic Material Engineering Technology Research and Development Center; we have built 5 municipal, municipal-university co-built or university-enterprise co-built scientific research platforms, including the Eastern Guangdong Bio-pharmaceutical Engineering Technology Research Center, Chaozhou Cultural Overseas Communication Base, and the Great Health Industry University-Enterprise Co-built Collaborative Innovation Center; we have also built 49 school-level scientific research platforms, including the Guangdong Eastern Physics Basic Education Research Center, "Han School Master Project" Research Base, Chaoshan Tourism Culture and Planning Key Laboratory, Basic Education Research Institute, Higher Education Research Institute, and Chaoshan Folk Craft Research Center.
We place great emphasis on cultivating students' scientific literacy, humanistic qualities, practical abilities, and innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities. In the past three years, students have participated in various national and provincial competitions, such as the "Challenge Cup" Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition for College Students, the China International "Internet+" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the College Students' Advertising Art Competition, Mathematical Modeling Competition, Electronic Design Contest, Robotics Competition, and the Normal College Students' Teaching Skills Competition, winning 43 national awards and 345 provincial awards. In short, our students' core competitiveness continues to improve.
We adhere to an open approach to education and actively expand its international development path. We have established close educational and academic exchange cooperation relationships with 37 universities and educational institutions in 12 countries including Kazakhstan, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, and Australia, as well as in the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions. This has broadened the University's educational field and enhanced the international level and external influence of the school's education.
Guided by Xin Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era, our University adheres to the educational positioning of "normal education, applicability, regional characteristics, and openness". Taking the "Strengthening Guangdong's Higher Education" initiative and the revitalization plan for colleges and universities in the eastern, western, and northern parts of Guangdong as an opportunity, the University promotes reform and development through innovative systems and mechanisms, compensates for disciplinary shortcomings with the construction of high-level talents, promotes teacher education with the construction of first-class disciplines, and serves the economic and social development of the region with the construction of characteristic disciplines.
