Inner Mongolia Normal University (formerly Inner Mongolia Normal College) is one of the earliest higher education institutions established in ethnic minority regions after the founding of New China. It is a key university in the region, supported by the national “Revitalization Plan for Higher Education in Central and Western China” and included in the Ministry of Education’s “Support Plan for Higher Education Institutions in Western China.” On November 20, 1951, the People's Government of Inner Mongolia decided to establish Inner Mongolia Normal College in Ulanhot and begin enrolling students in 1952. In August 1954, the university moved to Hohhot. In 1978, the university began admitting graduate students. It was renamed Inner Mongolia Normal University in 1982 and listed as a key university in the autonomous region. In 2000, Inner Mongolia Educational College merged with the university. In 2006, the university was approved to offer doctoral degree programs in first-level disciplines. After several generations of hard work and practical exploration, it has become an important base for training teachers for basic education in the region. It is also a center for continuing education for primary and secondary school teachers and a research center for the reform and development of basic education.

The university has two campuses: Saihan Campus and Shengle Campus, covering a total area of 2.228 million square meters, with a building area of 1.07 million square meters. The total value of fixed assets is more than 3.85 billion yuan, with teaching and research equipment worth over 800 million yuan. The library has over 2.88 million books, 2.39 million e-books and e-journals, more than 1,400 domestic and foreign journals, and over 80 domestic and international databases. The university has 22 administrative departments, 2 student organizations, 5 teaching support institutions, 26 teaching departments, 2 cooperative schools, and 5 affiliated schools.

The university currently employs 2,061 staff members (excluding cooperative education staff), including 1,353 full-time faculty. Of these, 725 faculty members hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 53.58% of the full-time faculty, while 258 full-time faculty hold senior professional titles, accounting for 19.07%, and 477 faculty hold associate senior titles, accounting for 35.25%. The university has 126 doctoral supervisors, 1,208 master’s supervisors, 23 provincial-level teaching masters, and 39 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country and the region. Since 2002, the university has selected or introduced notable talents, including 1 “Changjiang Scholar,” 5 from the “Hundred Talents Program,” 3 from the “Ten Thousand Talents Plan,” 5 national-level young talents, and 163 instances of provincial “New Century 321 Talent Project” selections. It has 35 experts receiving special allowances from the State Council and 86 individuals or teams funded by the “Grassland Talent” program. The university has also selected 1 teaching team for the "National University Yellow Day Teacher Team." The university has invited nearly 560 renowned domestic and foreign experts and scholars, including 7 academicians and 5 members of academic departments, as academic advisors, visiting professors, and part-time professors.

The university currently has 24,031 full-time undergraduate students (excluding those in cooperative education programs), 5,119 master’s and doctoral students, 403 adult education students, and 183 international students, forming a multi-level talent cultivation system.

The university offers 95 undergraduate programs, including 27 general teaching programs, 21 vocational education teaching programs, and 81 programs for 2023 admissions. These cover 10 major disciplines. The university has 1 national-level excellent course, 1 national-level online open course, 11 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 2 national-level teaching teams, and 6 Ministry of Education specialty programs. It has 1 national-level "Comprehensive Reform Pilot" program, 1 regional-level "Comprehensive Reform Pilot" program, 32 provincial-level brand programs, and 4 provincial key construction programs. It also offers 78 provincial-level excellent courses, 17 provincial-level teaching teams, and 10 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. The university has 22 national-level first-class undergraduate program construction points and 11 provincial-level first-class undergraduate program construction points. The university also has a key research base for undergraduate talent cultivation in ethnic minority regions, supported by the Ministry of Education’s National Education Development Center for Ethnic Groups.

The university has 8 doctoral degree programs in first-level disciplines, 3 postdoctoral research stations, 26 master’s degree programs in first-level disciplines, and 16 master’s professional degree programs. It also offers 4 provincial “first-class excellence training disciplines” and has 18 provincial key and cultivated disciplines. The university has the qualifications to recommend students for admission to master’s programs without exams.

The university has 58 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including 1 National Research Base for the Chinese National Community, 1 Ministry of Education Key Laboratory (under cultivation), 3 Ministry of Education National and Regional Studies Centers, 4 key research bases for philosophy and social sciences in Inner Mongolia, 1 regional research base for strengthening Chinese national community awareness, 1 regional applied mathematics research center, 7 regional key laboratories, 3 regional engineering research centers, 3 regional academicians’ expert workstations, 1 regional co-working space, and 1 regional key research base for humanities and social sciences in higher education institutions. The university also boasts 4 regional engineering research centers, 3 bases for the inheritance of excellent traditional Chinese culture, and numerous other centers focused on social sciences and non-material cultural heritage.

In the past 72 years, the university has adhered to its motto of “Dedication, Pragmatism, Unity, and Progress,” training and sending over 300,000 graduates. The university insists on an open educational model and has signed cooperative agreements with 56 universities from 14 countries and regions, including Russia, Mongolia, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the United States, Belarus, the UK, and Germany. It has established Confucius Institutes in Russia and Mongolia and a Confucius Classroom in Mongolia. The university is also an institution for training master’s students in Chinese International Education.
