Jiangxi Police College traces its origins to the Jiangxi Provincial Public Security School established in 1951. It has gone through various stages of development, including becoming Jiangxi Political and Legal College, Jiangxi Political and Legal Cadre School, Jiangxi Provincial People’s Police School, and Jiangxi Police Vocational College. In March 2010, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Jiangxi Police College as a full-time public undergraduate institution. In November 2011, the Ministry of Public Security and the Jiangxi Provincial Government signed an agreement to jointly build Jiangxi Police College, establishing a national Economic Crime Investigation Education and Training Base at the college. It became the first undergraduate police college in China to be co-built by the Ministry of Public Security and a provincial government. In 2024, the college was listed as a pilot institution for cybersecurity talent training and one of the first units to implement the Special Action Plan for Industrial Information Security Talent Development.

In recent years, the college has been guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It has deeply implemented General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speeches on public security and education, particularly those given during his visits to Jiangxi. Following the goal of "leading, striving for excellence, and being proactive," the college has developed a comprehensive educational strategy called "12345," which includes a core educational theme, two key educational focuses, the deepening of "three-in-one" reforms, the establishment of "four support systems," and the advancement of "five campuses." The college is focused on achieving a high-level, distinctive, application-oriented educational model while adhering to the direction of cultivating high-quality, professional, and versatile talents. It aims to make breakthroughs in political education, creating a distinctive school culture, reform, quality assurance, and strict governance.

The college is located at 1666 Meiling Avenue, Xinjian District, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. The campus covers an area of 1,932.68 acres, with a building area of 224,900 square meters, of which 105,400 square meters are dedicated to teaching and administrative buildings.

The college has 9 teaching schools (departments) and currently enrolls 5,575 students. It offers 11 public security-related majors, including Criminal Investigation, Economic Crime Investigation, Public Security Studies, Forensic Science, Traffic Management Engineering, Security Engineering, Public Administration, Cybersecurity and Law Enforcement, Police Command and Tactics, Political Work in Public Security, and Food and Drug Crime Investigation Technology, as well as 3 general programs such as Law, Information Security, and Social Sports Guidance and Management. Among these, Economic Crime Investigation is a national-level first-class program, while Criminal Investigation, Public Security Studies, Forensic Science, Cybersecurity and Law Enforcement, and Law are provincial-level first-class programs. In April 2024, the college established a Cybersecurity College approved by the Jiangxi Provincial Public Security Department, adding new programs in Security Technology, Information Security Technology Applications, and Drone Technology.

The college currently has 423 faculty members, including 37 professors, 70 associate professors, and 223 with master's or doctoral degrees. The faculty includes a National Teaching Master, 2 National Excellent Teachers, 2 recipients of Special Allowances from the Provincial Government, 2 recipients of Ministry of Public Security allowances, 4 Ministry of Public Security Teaching Masters, 6 Excellent Teachers from National Police Colleges, and other notable academic leaders.

The college has 3 national-level excellent courses and 33 provincial and ministerial-level excellent and demonstration courses. It also has 4 outstanding teaching teams, 3 talent cultivation mode innovation experimental zones, and 4 pilot projects for comprehensive professional reform. Since 2020, the college has developed 17 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, 4 provincial-level ideological and political courses, and 5 high-level undergraduate teaching teams. The Public Security Research Center has been approved by the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education as a key research base for humanities and social sciences. The Electronic Data Control and Forensics Laboratory was approved in 2024 as a provincial-level key laboratory by the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology.

From 2010 to 2024, the college's faculty published over 2,700 academic papers, including more than 360 in core journals. The college has won nearly 1,000 teaching and research awards, including 32 provincial and ministerial-level awards. It has been granted more than 890 research projects, including 5 national-level projects and more than 450 provincial-level projects. The college has also been involved in 3 Ministry of Education Industry-University Cooperation and Collaborative Education projects. The college has published over 260 books and textbooks, including 2 national-level planning textbooks for higher education, 3 provincial-level planning textbooks, and 4 provincial-level award-winning textbooks. The college's journal, Jiangxi Police College Journal, ranks 6th in influence among police colleges nationwide, and Economic Crime Investigation Research has wide influence in the national economic crime investigation system.

Since its establishment as an undergraduate institution, the college has graduated more than 10,000 students, many of whom have gone on to become outstanding figures in the national public security system. For example, 24 students, including Cheng Yonglin, have become national public security heroes and models. The college has trained over 150,000 in-service police officers and political and legal cadres both within and outside the province.
