Jiangxi University of Engineering is located in Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province. It was founded in October 1983, born under the spring breeze of China’s reform and opening-up, growing alongside the market economy. The institution started as a training program and progressed through stages, becoming Xinyu Electronics Technology School, Jiangxi Yuzhou Electronics Industrial College, and Jiangxi Yuzhou Electronics Industrial Vocational College. In April 2001, it was approved by the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government and filed with the Ministry of Education, becoming Jiangxi Yuzhou Science and Technology Vocational College, a regular higher vocational institution. In May 2014, the college was upgraded to an undergraduate institution and renamed Jiangxi University of Engineering. In 2018, it was granted the authority to award bachelor's degrees.
The university covers an area of 1,317,400 square meters (1,976 acres), ranking 52nd in terms of campus size among private universities in China on the 2023 Chinese University Rankings (CNUR). The total building area is 565,700 square meters, with teaching and research equipment worth 147 million yuan. The library holds 1.8182 million paper books and 1.85 million electronic books. The university has 1 provincial-level university science and technology park, 1 provincial-level innovation platform, 2 provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship bases, 1 talent cultivation model innovation experimental zone, 28 experimental centers with 251 laboratories, and 130 off-campus internships and training bases.
The university was ranked 76th in the 2016 iResearch China Alumni Association's "Top 100 Wealth-Building Universities" list (the only private university in the top 100). With a composite strength score of 85.5 points, it ranked 81st in the 2022 ABC Chinese Private University Top 100 list, and 4th in Jiangxi Province in 2023. In the latest 2023 Soft Science Chinese Private Universities ranking, it ranked 68th nationally.
As of the latest Ministry of Education evaluation, the university currently has 20,520 full-time students and 1,112 staff members. Among the staff, there are 15 doctoral advisors, 64 master's advisors, 1 expert with the State Council's special government allowance, and 2 provincial government special allowance experts. The faculty includes 1 provincial-level excellent teacher, 1 provincial-level rising star in teaching, 3 provincial-level high-level teaching teams, 5 young and middle-aged provincial teaching backbones, 397 faculty members with senior professional titles, and 652 faculty members holding master's degrees or higher.
The university has 13 academic schools (departments), offering 38 undergraduate programs and 39 diploma programs across seven disciplines: engineering, literature, economics, management, art, education, and science. The university has been selected for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's "Special Action Plan for Industrial Information Security Talent Cultivation," with only 4 universities in Jiangxi Province, and Jiangxi University of Engineering being the only private institution included. The university offers 2 provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs and 2 provincial-level distinctive programs. In 2023, the university’s Blockchain Engineering program ranked second nationally and was awarded A+ level. The university currently offers 5 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration courses, 5 provincial-level high-quality online courses, and 1 provincial-level "frontline classroom" outstanding micro-course. The university has won 2 provincial-level teaching achievement awards and 1 provincial-level modern industry academy cultivation project.
Since becoming an undergraduate institution, the university has undertaken 199 national and provincial-level research projects, published over 230 books and textbooks, and produced more than 2,800 academic papers, including over 280 high-quality papers. It has received over 800 national patents. Since 2019, the university has won 1 national social science fund key project, 3 general projects, and 1 central government-directed special fund project. It has also secured 3 provincial-level science and technology projects and 53 provincial-level educational reform projects. The university has participated in the Jiangxi Province Higher Education Technology Achievement Matching Conferences, contributing to the commercialization of technological innovations. At the 4th Jiangxi Higher Education Science and Technology Achievement Conference, 22 projects were showcased, with contracts worth 36 million yuan signed on-site. The university has represented Jiangxi at the China International High-tech Achievements Fair for eight consecutive years, with two products winning the Excellent Product Award—making Jiangxi University of Engineering the only award-winning institution in the province.
The university is a collaborative education project unit under the Ministry of Education and a pilot unit for the "Promoting Education and Learning through Competitions" initiative by the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government. In March 2024, the university’s application for an Intelligent Manufacturing Industry College was approved, marking its inclusion in the second batch of Jiangxi Province's modern industry colleges. Since becoming an undergraduate institution, the university has approved 19 Ministry of Education industry-academia collaborative projects and has won 3,295 awards in national and provincial academic and skill competitions, including 422 national-level awards and 2,873 provincial-level awards. Notably, in the "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the university has won 6 national bronze medals and 4 provincial gold medals. In the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the university has received 3 national first prizes. Additionally, in the United States’ Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the university earned 1 international first prize.
Throughout its history, the university has adhered to the innovation spirit and craftsmanship of "Tiangong Kaiwu" (The Art of Heavenly Work), gradually forming a distinctive "Tiangong Culture" for talent cultivation and an emphasis on innovative and entrepreneurial application-oriented talent development.
The university’s motto is "Diligence, Simplicity, Sensitivity, and Trust." It focuses on moral education and talent cultivation, having produced over 200,000 application-oriented graduates. Notable alumni include Ou Min, a national excellent party affairs worker, Li Guoping, a winner of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, Yi Haiping, one of China’s top ten algorithm chip industry leaders, Sun Qinghuan, a recurring figure on the Forbes Global Billionaire List (2017’s wealthiest person in Jiangxi), and many others. Seven graduates have met with national leaders. Many graduates have found success in Shenzhen, transforming from farmers to urban residents. Outstanding alumni like Sun Qinghuan, Li Guoping, and Lan Guoxian have returned to invest in Jiangxi, with an estimated investment of nearly 30 billion yuan, making the university a leading institution for fostering local entrepreneurship.
The university has been selected as a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education’s "One-Stop" Student Community Comprehensive Management Model. It has also received numerous awards, including "National Advanced Unit for Self-Discipline and Integrity in Private Non-enterprise Organizations," "Advanced Party Organization of Jiangxi Province," and "Excellent Unit for Employment Work of Graduates in Jiangxi Province."
