Nanjing Institute of Physical Education is the only sports higher education institution in Jiangsu Province jointly managed by the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education. It is also an important provincial-level base for competitive sports training in Jiangsu.
Founded in 1956 as Nanjing Sports School at the former site of the Central Sports Stadium, the institute's academic roots trace back to the Central National Physical Education School established by Zhang Zhijiang in 1933. In 1958, Nanjing Sports School merged with the Physical Education Department of Jiangsu Normal College and the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Cadres Training Class to form Nanjing Sports College, which was renamed Nanjing Institute of Physical Education in the same year.
In 1998, Nanjing Institute of Physical Educationwas approved as a master's degree-granting institution, and in 2017, it was approved to be a doctoral degree-granting institution. In 2014, the China Tennis Academy was established through a tripartite collaboration between the General Administration of Sports of China, Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau, and Nanjing Sports Institute. That year, the institute also hosted the tennis and badminton events for the second Youth Olympic Games. In 2022, the China Fencing Academy was officially established through collaboration between the Chinese Fencing Association, Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau, and Nanjing Sports Institute.
Upholding the spirit of “strictness and simplicity,” Nanjing Institute of Physical Education has developed its unique "triple integration" model of teaching, training, and research, known as the “Nanjing Sports Model” through long-term academic practice. The institute has nurtured elite sports talents, including 18 Olympic champions such as Luan Jujie and Zhang Yufei, and 119 world champions. It has also trained thousands of professionals in the sports field, including notable figures like Yuan Weimin (former Director of the General Administration of Sports of China), Zhang Jun (President of the Chinese Badminton Association), Wang Haibin (President of the Chinese Fencing Association), and international football referee Ma Ning. The institute has received full recognition from party and national leaders, the General Administration of Sports of China, the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Government, and the President of the International Olympic Committee. It has won multiple national and provincial awards and is known as "the cradle of world champions" and "a model of sports education integration." Several alumni, including Xiao Aihua, Chen Ruolin, Xu Anqi, and Zhang Yufei, have been selected as representatives to the National Party Congress or the National People’s Congress.
The institute has three campuses: Linggu Temple, Xianlin, and Wukesong, covering an area of over 1,100 acres. The Linggu Temple campus is located in the nationally renowned scenic area of Zhongshan, the site of the Central Sports Stadium built in 1931, offering both rich historical heritage and beautiful natural landscapes. The Xianlin campus is located in Xianlin University Town in Nanjing, adjacent to the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau Training Center, offering an excellent human environment and sports training resources. The upcoming Wukesong campus, located across from the Linggu Temple campus, is designed with modern city university concepts, emphasizing both ecological green landscapes and the cultural traits of sports, and will be a new hub for high-level sports education, technological innovation, advanced sports training, and integrated physical and health services.
Remaining committed to its mission of “moral education,” the institute currently has six higher education colleges: the College of Physical Education and Humanities, the College of Sports Training, the College of Sports Health, the College of Sports Leisure and Industry, the College of Martial Arts and Arts, and the Marxism College. It offers 16 undergraduate programs in five disciplines, including education, literature, management, medicine, and the arts. The institute has a first-level master's degree program in sports and three professional master's degree programs in sports, education, and journalism & communication. It has more than 5,500 students and has been approved as a key unit for Jiangsu's Advantageous Discipline Construction Plan for four consecutive periods. The institute boasts five national-level first-class undergraduate programs, 12 provincial-level first-class programs, and several nationally recognized courses, with numerous accolades in higher education teaching achievements.
As the main base for competitive sports in Jiangsu Province, Nanjing Sports Institute has established five sports-specific colleges: the College of Ping-Pong and Badminton, the College of Tennis, the College of Fencing, the College of Gymnastics, and the College of Swimming. It also runs the Jiangsu Provincial Youth Sports School, with 11 provincial-level elite teams in sports such as table tennis, badminton, tennis, fencing, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, diving, synchronized swimming, and more. The institute has produced 18 Olympic champions and 119 world champions since its establishment, and it has helped Jiangsu win 220 gold medals in the National Games from the 1st to the 14th edition. Nanjing Institute of Physical Education has received the National Sports Outstanding Contribution Award and other honors.
The institute upholds the strategy of "talent-driven development." It currently employs 441 full-time faculty and coaches, including 84 senior professors, 160 associate professors, 125 doctorate holders, and 23 doctoral advisors. Among the faculty are several national-level leaders, experts, and world champions, including 20 world champions and 16 Asian Games champions. The coaches include 29 national-level coaches and 46 senior coaches.
Focusing on the development direction of "sports science and technology," Nanjing Institute of Physical Education has established national-level sports science bases and a series of high-end sports research institutes, including the Competitive Sports Research Institute and the China Tennis Academy. It has also launched several major research projects in sports science, publishing hundreds of research papers and winning national and provincial research awards. The institute is actively involved in research collaborations with top universities and research institutions, such as the National Sports Science Institute, Beijing Sport University, and Nanjing University, making significant contributions to the development of sports science.
The institute is also committed to open collaboration, partnering with various local governments and institutions in China, as well as universities and research organizations in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Germany, Spain, Poland, Denmark, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan. Through these partnerships, the institute has built a broad and diverse network for cooperation in sports, arts, and health, offering a global platform for talent development.
Looking forward, Nanjing Institute of Physical Education will continue to uphold Xi Jinping’s New Era of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics as its guiding ideology. It will implement the strategic plans outlined at the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, contribute to China’s modernization, and continue to develop into a high-level sports university that is distinctive, influential, and globally recognized. The institute is committed to achieving its goal of becoming a leader in sports education, making greater contributions to building a sports-strong nation and achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
