Nanjing Normal University of Special Education is a unique institution established by the Ministry of Education, the only one in China to focus on training teachers for special education while also cultivating professionals for the disability sector. Founded in 1982 with support from UNICEF, the university was initially named Nanjing Special Education Normal School. It was established to meet the needs of China’s disability and special education services, pioneering special education teacher training in the country. In 1997, it came under the administration of the Jiangsu Provincial Government, and in 2009, it became jointly managed by the Jiangsu Provincial Government and the China Disabled Persons' Federation. In 2015, it was renamed Nanjing Special Education Normal University.
Currently, the university has 9,449 full-time students, including more than 270 students with disabilities, and operates across three campuses: Qixia, Jiangning, and Pukou. The university library includes the Nanjing Barrier-Free Library, which boasts one of the largest collections of braille books among Chinese universities. It is also home to China’s first education history museum—The China Special Education Museum—featuring seven indoor and one outdoor exhibition areas.
The university continuously deepens educational and teaching reforms, striving to cultivate special education professionals who are capable of contributing to the revitalization of the nation. It offers 27 undergraduate programs across 10 colleges in fields such as education, literature, science, engineering, management, medicine, and arts. The university has four key disciplines recognized by Jiangsu Province’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and its programs have garnered numerous accolades, including being awarded national-level teaching achievement awards and Jiangsu Provincial teaching honors. It has also been recognized for its outstanding curriculum in special education, including national-level courses and resources.
In terms of research, the university focuses on serving industry needs and government decision-making. In recent years, it has led the establishment of the “National Special Education Alliance” and developed key professional standards for special education teachers and various services for disabled people. It has undertaken more than 20 national research projects and over 60 provincial and ministerial projects, winning numerous awards for scientific research achievements.
The university boasts a highly qualified faculty, with 750 staff members, including many with senior academic titles, doctoral degrees, and part-time graduate mentors. Over 100 faculty members have received various national and provincial recognitions, such as government special allowances and awards for teaching excellence.
As part of its international strategy, Nanjing SENU has established partnerships with institutions from 19 countries and regions, including the U.S., France, and Russia. It has signed agreements to form alliances with other special education organizations and actively promotes academic, cultural, and teacher-student exchange.
The university remains committed to serving China’s special education and disability services. With its motto “Benevolence Shapes the Soul,” it has strengthened its overall academic and social influence. It is recognized as a leading institution in the field of special education in China, winning numerous accolades, including being named a “National Advanced Unit in Special Education” and “National Model School for Language and Writing Standardization.”
