Ningxia University is a jointly established institution by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It is a national "Double First Class" construction university and a key university under the "211 Project."
Founded in 1958, Ningxia University merged with the former Ningxia University of Technology, Yinchuan Normal College (including Ningxia Education College) in December 1997; in February 2002, it merged with Ningxia Agricultural College to form the new Ningxia University. In April 2014, the Zhongwei campus was established, and in September 2017, it was selected as a "Double First Class" construction university. In February 2018, it became a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The university is located in Yinchuan, a historically rich and scenic city, covering an area of 2,935.54 acres, with an instructional experimental farm of 2,050.18 acres. The total building area is 924,000 square meters. The university has 2,738 staff members. It recruits students from 28 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The university currently has 19,688 full-time undergraduate students, 5,444 full-time master's students, 1,750 part-time master's students, 773 full-time doctoral students, 1,047 minority preparatory students, and 340 international students. The campus is characterized by numerous buildings, lush greenery, and an elegant environment, making it an ideal place for academic study.
Over its 60+ years of history, the university has adhered to its motto "Virtue, Diligence, Truth-seeking, Innovation" and promotes the "Jujube Tree Spirit" of "facing difficulties without fear, rooted deeply with flourishing branches." The university has been through hard work and innovation, embracing challenges and continuously making progress. In recent years, the university has seized historical opportunities such as provincial and ministerial joint construction, the comprehensive strength improvement project for universities in central and western China, "Double First Class" construction, and "Ministry-Region Joint Construction" to focus on quality improvement and continue its development, making it a comprehensive university with coordinated development across disciplines such as science, engineering, agriculture, economics, management, humanities, law, and arts.
At the seventh party congress of Ningxia University, the development goal was set to build it into a "first-class university in the western region, with distinct regional features and strong capabilities in serving local needs" by 2025. The university has outlined two main lines of work: "The core task of moral education and talent cultivation" and "The core development line of 'Double First Class' construction and 'Ministry-Region Joint Construction.'" Seven key tasks have been defined, and the university has set off on a new journey towards becoming a top-tier university in the western region.
The university currently has one national "Double First Class" discipline in Chemical Engineering and Technology, two regional and Ministry-joint constructed advantage and characteristic disciplines in Chemical Engineering and Technology and Ethnology, one national key discipline in Grassland Science, and one national key (fostering) discipline in Chinese Minority History. It also has 18 key disciplines in Ningxia, 8 distinct and superior disciplines in the "13th Five-Year Plan," and 16 first-class disciplines in Ningxia. The university offers 12 doctoral programs, 33 master's programs, 28 professional master's degree programs, and 4 postdoctoral research stations.
The faculty includes 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 12 specially appointed professors and 4 young scholars under national major talent projects, 4 national outstanding youth fund recipients, 1 national teaching master, 4 He Liang He Li Foundation winners in science and technology, and 1 person in the "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leadership team, among other recognized talents. The university also has numerous other national and regional awards and experts, such as those in the "National Outstanding Contribution Young and Middle-aged Experts" program and the "312 Talent Program."
The university emphasizes the fundamental task of "moral education and talent development" and adheres to the "student-centered" education philosophy. It promotes an educational reform that focuses on improving educational quality and matches talent training with the needs of economic and social development, aiming to cultivate high-quality talent with a solid foundation, international vision, and pursuit of excellence. The university offers 84 undergraduate programs, with 28 recognized as national first-class programs.
In research, the university is focused on the major national and regional strategic needs. Since the "13th Five-Year Plan," the university has undertaken 2,603 provincial and above-level research projects, with total research funding of 1.62 billion RMB. It has received numerous research awards, including the second prize for National Science and Technology Progress, 51 regional science and technology progress awards, and over 350 academic papers recognized in natural sciences.
Ningxia University has established research partnerships with over 45 universities and research institutions in 22 countries and regions, including the establishment of the first Confucius Institute in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in collaboration with Dubai University. It is the only HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) test center in Ningxia and has welcomed over 4,000 international students from more than 40 countries since 1992.
Looking ahead, Ningxia University will fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the 13th Party Congress of Ningxia, focusing on the fundamental task of moral education and talent development. The university will take full advantage of the opportunities presented by "Double First Class" construction and "Ministry-Region Joint Construction" and strive to become a first-class university in western China with distinct regional features and strong capabilities in serving local development.
