Zhāng Hóng: Mǎlì, nǐ bú shì xiǎng xué zuò Zhōngguó cài ma? Jīntiān wǒ jiù jiāo nǐ zuò yí ge Zhōngguó de jiācháng cài.
Zhang Hong: Mary, didn’t you want to learn how to cook Chinese food? Today I’ll teach you how to make a Chinese home-style dish.
Mǎlì: “Jiācháng cài” shì shénme cài ya?
Mary: What kind of dish is a “home-style dish”?
Zhāng Hóng: Jiācháng cài jiù shì Zhōngguó rén píngshí zài jiā lǐ cháng chī de cài.
Zhang Hong: Home-style dishes are dishes that Chinese people often eat at home in daily life.
Mǎlì: Hǎo a, wǒ jiù xiǎng xué zuò zài jiā lǐ chī de cài. Duì le, zuò shénme cài ya?
Mary: Great, I want to learn how to make dishes people eat at home. By the way, what dish are we making?
Zhāng Hóng: Xīhóngshì chǎo jīdàn, yòu hǎochī yòu hǎo xué, zánmen yìqǐ zuò zěnmeyàng?
Zhang Hong: Tomato scrambled eggs. It’s both tasty and easy to learn. How about we make it together?
Mǎlì: Xíng, wǒ zuò shénme?
Mary: Okay. What should I do?
Zhāng Hóng: Lái, bǎ jīdàn dǎ dào zhè ge wǎn lǐ, yòng kuàizi jiǎobàn jūnyún, zài bǎ xīhóngshì qiē chéng xiǎo kuàir.
Zhang Hong: Here, crack the eggs into this bowl, stir them evenly with chopsticks, then cut the tomatoes into small pieces.
Mǎlì: Nǐ kàn zhème dà xíng ma?
Mary: Look, is this size okay?
Zhāng Hóng: Tǐng hǎo. Nǐ bǎ huǒ diǎn zháo, bǎ guō fàng zài huǒ shàng, wǎng guō lǐ dào diǎnr yóu, bǎ jīdàn fàng jìnqù chǎo yíxiàr, dào chūlái. Zài fàng yìdiǎnr yóu, bǎ xīhóngshì fàng jìn guō lǐ chǎo shú, bǎ chǎo hǎo de jīdàn fàng jìnqù, bié wàng le jiā diǎnr báitáng, zuìhòu zài jiā diǎnr yán. …… Hǎo le, chángchang, zěnmeyàng?
Zhang Hong: Pretty good. Light the stove, put the wok on the flame, pour a little oil into the wok, put the eggs in and stir-fry them briefly, then take them out. Add a little more oil, put the tomatoes into the wok and cook them through, then add the cooked eggs back in. Don’t forget to add a little sugar, and finally add a little salt. … Okay, taste it. How is it?
Mǎlì: Ńg, yòu hǎokàn yòu hǎochī, zhēn búcuò!
Mary: Mmm, it looks good and tastes good. Really nice!
Zhāng Hóng: Shì a, zhè jiù shì Zhōngguó cài de tèdiǎn: kàn qǐlái piàoliang, wén qǐlái hěn xiāng, chī qǐlái hǎochī.
Zhang Hong: Yes, this is a characteristic of Chinese food: it looks beautiful, smells fragrant, and tastes delicious.
Mǎlì: Jiù shì zuò qǐlái bú tài róngyì.
Mary: It’s just that making it isn’t very easy.
