Bohai University was established in February 1950. It is a comprehensive university sponsored by the Liaoning Provincial Government and is located in Jinzhou, a historical and cultural city on the coast of the Bohai Sea. The university is eligible to recommend outstanding recent undergraduate graduates for direct admission to master's degree programs without entrance exams and is an institution for the training of international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship.
The university covers an area of over 2,250 acres, with a total building area of 600,000 square meters. It has 20 secondary colleges and offers 53 undergraduate programs. The university has 17 first-level master's degree programs and 18 professional master's degree programs, spanning disciplines such as economics, law, education, literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, management, and the arts. It currently has more than 24,000 full-time master's and undergraduate students.
The university has more than 1,300 full-time faculty members, including over 200 professors and more than 560 PhDs. Among its faculty, there are winners of national science and technology advancement awards, participants in the national high-level talent support program, recipients of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, national-level candidates for the "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talent Project," nationwide outstanding teachers, recipients of the State Council Special Government Allowance, members of the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Program, Liao Ning Province Climbing Scholars, and other distinguished national and provincial experts and talents.
The university has 1 provincial first-class discipline project (A category), 3 provincial first-class characteristic discipline projects, and 7 provincial key discipline cultivation projects. It also has 1 National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center, 1 Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Technical R&D Professional Center, 1 National Ethnic Community Research Center under the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 Ministry of Education National and Regional Studies Center, and numerous other national and provincial research and development bases, including a national-level innovation and entrepreneurship practice base, 6 provincial key laboratories, and 18 provincial science and technology small institutes.
The university has been included in the Ministry of Education's Double-Top Plan for the construction of first-class undergraduate programs with 24 programs, including 11 national-level first-class programs and 13 provincial-level first-class programs. It also has 18 national and provincial featured (demonstration) and pilot programs. It has developed 160 first-class courses at the national and provincial levels, 24 excellent textbooks, and has received over 700 national and provincial teaching and educational reform project approvals, winning 120 national and provincial teaching achievement awards.
In the past five years, the university's faculty has led and completed over 1,000 research projects, including 95 national-level projects, with over 500 research awards. Faculty members have published 3,992 papers, with 2,154 papers indexed in SCI, EI, and CPCI. The university has published 312 academic books and has been granted 688 invention patents.
Bohai University Journal (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) has been rated as a "National Excellent University Social Sciences Journal," and the university's agricultural science, chemistry, engineering, and computer science disciplines are in the top 1% globally according to ESI data. The university is ranked 272nd in the national graduate education competitiveness ranking and 13th in Liaoning Province.
The university has partnerships with over 30 universities and educational institutions from countries including the U.S., U.K., Japan, Poland, France, South Korea, Russia, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Cyprus, and others. It hosts international students from more than 30 countries and regions, and collaborates with institutions such as the University of Burundi and the University of Bangui in Central Africa to establish Confucius Institutes, promoting cultural exchanges between China and Africa.
The university boasts excellent infrastructure, including a library with over 3 million books, and ample laboratory and research equipment. The campus is picturesque with lush greenery, having been awarded "Liaoning's Most Beautiful Campus" in 2019 and "Liaoning Provincial Civilized Campus" from 2021 to 2023. It is also recognized as a national model for greening and a provincial model for campus safety and environmental education.
