Communication University of Shanxi(山西传媒学院)

Communication University of Shanxi is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Shanxi Province and the National Radio and Television Administration. Its predecessor was the North China Radio and Television School established by the former Ministry of Radio and Television in 1983. In 1990, it became the Radio, Film and Television Management Cadre College under the management of the Ministry of Radio, Film, and Television. In 2000, it was transferred to the People's Government of Shanxi Province and renamed the Radio, Film, and Television Management Cadre College. In 2013, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shanxi Media University was officially established, becoming the third public undergraduate media institution in China. In 2010, it began joint undergraduate programs with Shanxi University, and in 2016, it began joint master's degree programs in Journalism and Communication with Shanxi University. In 2020, the university was selected by the Shanxi Provincial Degree Office as a project for the authorization of master's degree programs. The university is a "National Animation Teaching Research Base" and a "Broadcast and Television Network Audio-Visual Talent Training Base" under the National Radio and Television Administration, a "Base for the Cultivation of Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent" under the Shanxi Provincial Propaganda Department, and a pilot university for the transformation towards application-oriented institutions in Shanxi Province.

After nearly 40 years of multi-level educational exploration, the university has formed its motto "Thick Virtue and Broad Knowledge, Diligence and Practicality," its educational purpose of "Creating a University Satisfying the People," and its educational philosophy of "People-oriented, Fostering Virtue, Scientific Development." Since 2013, the university has adhered strictly to the standards for undergraduate teaching and the requirements for the development of application-oriented institutions. It follows a socialist direction in education, focusing on fostering virtue and talent, with the principle of "Improving Quality" at the core of its development, forming a consensus within the school. The university has consolidated its educational characteristics with a focus on "Media as the Foundation, Soul as the Core, Balancing Theory and Practice, Upholding Integrity and Innovation." The school has established a development plan with a focus on "three adherences and four efforts" — adhering to fostering virtue, integrating Party leadership, internal development, and strengthening undergraduate education.

The university has two campuses, Wenhua and Donghua. The main campus (Wenhua) is located in the New University District of Shanxi Province in Yuci District, Jinzhong City, while the Donghua campus is located in the Yingze District of Taiyuan City. The university occupies a total area of 812 acres, with a building area of 280,000 square meters. The campus includes 172,200 square meters of teaching and administrative buildings, 47,900 square meters of sports facilities, and 4,800 square meters of student activity centers. The university boasts rich academic resources, with 1.0935 million printed books, 810 periodicals, 244,000 electronic journals, and 131,000 hours of audio-visual materials. It has a modern electronic library system and a computer network service system that provides efficient and convenient support for teaching and research. The university has 2 training buildings and 1 broadcasting center with a total building area of 67,385.08 square meters, and is constructing a comprehensive training building with an area of 25,795 square meters. The university's teaching and research equipment is valued at 250 million yuan. The university has 110 off-campus practice teaching bases in radio, television, and other media institutions across the country.

The university offers 12 colleges: Shanxi Film Academy, Animation and Digital Arts College (National Animation Teaching Research Base), Art and Design College, Broadcasting and Hosting College, Journalism and Communication College, Cultural Creativity and Management College, Information Engineering College, Performing Arts College, Audio-Visual College, Marxism College (under development), Humanities College, and Continuing Education College. It also has 4 research institutions: Drama and Film Research Center, Cultural Creativity and Design Research Center, Bai Yansheng Drama Research and Communication Center, and Intangible Cultural Heritage Research and Communication Center. The university has 6 academic support institutions, including the library, archives (museum), information center, practice teaching center (film production center), teaching quality monitoring and evaluation center, and editorial office.

The university employs 685 staff members, including 573 full-time faculty members. Of these, 242 hold senior titles and 537 have master's degrees or higher. The faculty includes members of national academic committees such as the Ministry of Education’s higher education teaching guidance committee, key leaders in radio and television, and winners of national awards. The university has attracted experts like Bai Yansheng in drama studies and well-known scholars such as Jia Zhangke, Jin Guoping, Wang Tie, and Ma Yukun as part of its faculty.

In the past three years, the university has undertaken 298 scientific research projects, including one project funded by the National Social Science Fund, a key research project by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and projects by the Ministry of Education and the National Arts Fund. The faculty has published 622 academic papers, including 3 in SCI journals and 229 in core journals. They have published 148 academic books and produced 279 creative works, winning 79 awards. The university has been awarded 11 provincial-level social science research excellence awards.

The university currently offers 30 undergraduate programs, enrolling students from all 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in China, with 9,722 full-time students. The university's Drama and Film Studies is a key discipline in Shanxi Province, and it has been selected as a provincial "service industry innovation discipline group." The university offers 8 programs included in the national "Double Ten Thousand Plan" for top undergraduate programs and one national-level first-class course. There are 29 provincial first-class courses, as well as 1 national first-class experimental teaching demonstration center and 1 cultural industry innovation research institute.

The university is committed to an "Open, Shared, Cooperative, and Win-Win" philosophy, implementing an "International+" plan to create a higher quality, broader, and more secure international education exchange platform. It has partnered with more than 30 institutions in countries such as Germany, Russia, Japan, the UK, and the US. It has also established joint programs with European universities and dispatched faculty and students for international exchange.
