Haikou University of Economics is the first independent private undergraduate university in Hainan Province, established in 2008 with approval from the Ministry of Education. The school's history dates back to 1974 when Haikou Amateur University was founded, evolving through various stages including Haikou Vocational University and Haikou Economic Vocational and Technical College. The university has firmly positioned itself as a provider of applied talent, with a focus on "one center" (talent cultivation), two main lines (teaching and research), and the development of three major areas (faculty, disciplines and majors, and infrastructure). It has been actively pursuing the transformation of higher vocational education to undergraduate education and focusing on quality over quantity. The construction of an entrepreneurial university has been steadily advanced, with significant growth in both academic strength and talent cultivation.
The university boasts excellent facilities, covering a total campus area of about 1,800 acres with a building area of 738,800 square meters and a total investment of over 3 billion RMB. It has complete teaching and research equipment valued at 180 million RMB, a well-stocked library with more than 1.73 million physical books and 6.92 million digital resources, as well as full cultural, sports, and living facilities, making it an ideal place for students to study.
The university is composed of 16 colleges, including the College of Media and Communication, Nanhai College of Music, Nanhai College of Art and Technology, Nanhai College of Film, Wulinfeng College of Sports, Dexing Zhihua Accounting College, Juxing Digital Economy College, Nanhai College of Fine Arts, and others, along with teaching departments such as the College of Marxism and Continuing Education. It offers 52 undergraduate programs and 50 specialized programs across 6 disciplines: economics, management, literature, engineering, arts, and education. In May 2012, the university was granted the authority to confer bachelor’s degrees, and it now enrolls students from all 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China. Currently, the university has 26,059 full-time students, including 18,871 undergraduates, 28 international undergraduates, and 7,160 specialized students.
The university has continuously strengthened its internal development and refined its applied talent cultivation model, implementing deep educational reforms. It currently has 1 national pilot project for professional reform, 13 provincial-level pilot programs, and 12 provincial-level first-class programs. It also hosts 1 national virtual research room and 1 national first-class course development project, alongside many other provincial-level projects. The university actively explores international cooperation, establishing partnerships with universities in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, Canada, Thailand, and Malaysia, enriching its educational resources.
Since 2016, the university has been designated as a demonstration university for applied undergraduate education by the Hainan Provincial Department of Education and is a pilot institution for master’s degree programs. In 2021, after an expert review, the university was recognized as a model for applied education transformation. The university adheres to an approach of attracting people with sincerity and benefits, uniting them with a sense of purpose and environment, and motivating them with spirit and systems. It aims to build a harmonious, open, and equal atmosphere with a broad vision and has assembled an efficient and pragmatic management, teaching, and research team to achieve further development.
The governance system is based on a board of directors and a president in charge. The chairman, Cao Chengjie, is recognized as a prominent figure in education and politics, having received many accolades such as "Outstanding Talent of Hainan Province" and holding leadership positions in various educational organizations. The university also benefits from experienced leadership, with former presidents having had long-standing roles in university administration.
Currently, the university has 1,369 full-time faculty members, including 474 with senior professional titles and 990 with graduate degrees. It has 4 experts receiving special government allowances, along with various other academic distinctions. The faculty is focused on applied talent cultivation and actively participates in teaching and research reforms. In recent years, faculty members have been awarded numerous research projects, published thousands of academic papers, and received teaching and research awards.
The university maintains a strong commitment to political awareness, aligning with national educational policies and ensuring the protection of faculty and students' rights. It has been recognized as a national model in terms of party-building and ideological work in private institutions, with the counseling system, ideological education, and psychological health education all being key areas of focus.
With a focus on talent development, the university integrates innovation and entrepreneurship education, establishing an Innovation and Entrepreneurship College and funding a startup fund. It offers a comprehensive quality education system, fostering students' practical abilities and preparing them for successful careers. Its graduates are highly regarded by employers for their adaptability, strong abilities, and high quality, with many becoming high-level executives and social elites.
The university's achievements have earned it multiple accolades, including recognition as a "National Advanced Social Organization," "National Private Education Advanced Collective," and "Top 50 Innovative and Entrepreneurial Universities in China" by the Ministry of Education. It has received praise from various high-profile figures, including visits from Nobel laureates and government officials.
