Founded in March 2003 (Hubei Education Development [2003] No. 31), the Institute of Medicine and Nursing is an independent college approved by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education and established by Hubei University of Medicine. It is the only independent medical undergraduate college in Hubei Province (Hubei Education Development [2004] No. 12).
1. Educational Conditions
The Institute offers a comprehensive range of programs, primarily focused on undergraduate education, while retaining some degree programs at the associate level. The college currently offers a five-year Clinical Medicine program, Anesthesiology, Preventive Medicine, and a four-year program in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Therapy, Medical Imaging Technology, Public Administration, Information Resource Management, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Software Engineering, totaling 12 undergraduate programs. In 2010, all the college’s undergraduate programs passed the Hubei Provincial Department of Education’s undergraduate teaching quality evaluation. In 2012, it was authorized by the Hubei Provincial Degree Committee as a degree-granting institution. The college can confer Bachelor’s degrees in Medicine, Science, Engineering, and Management.
The college has 388 faculty and staff members, with 371 full-time teachers and 133 part-time instructors. Among the full-time teachers, 215 hold senior professional titles (57.95% of full-time faculty), 118 hold intermediate professional titles (31.80%), and 38 hold junior professional titles (10.24%). Additionally, 338 full-time teachers (91.10%) hold master's degrees or higher. Over recent years, with strong support from the parent institution and based on resource sharing, the college has adhered to the principle of being “efficient and well-equipped,” combining full-time and part-time faculty while focusing on full-time staff. The faculty’s education level and age structure have become more balanced.
The Institute currently collaborates with several affiliated teaching hospitals, including the First Hospital of Danjiangkou City, shared with Hubei University of Medicine. The college also shares teaching resources with six other affiliated hospitals, including Taihe Hospital of Shiyan City, Shiyan People's Hospital, Dongfeng Motor Corporation General Hospital, Xiangyang First People's Hospital, Suizhou Central Hospital, and Ankang Central Hospital. The teaching hospitals are well-managed, with strong faculty and advanced medical equipment, meeting the clinical teaching needs of various programs. Furthermore, the Institute has 51 clinical internship hospitals in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, and Chengdu.
2. Internal Management
The Institute has a Board of Directors, which serves as the decision-making body. The board is responsible for setting the development direction, educational policies, and development plans for the Institute, as well as making decisions about key issues such as professional construction and talent cultivation. The Institute follows a management system where the president is in charge under the leadership of the board.
The Institute is actively and steadily advancing its reform with a “highly integrated, gradually returned” decision-making approach. Externally, it fulfills the duties of a regular university legal entity, while internally it functions as a management-level secondary college under Hubei University of Medicine, fulfilling relevant administrative functions. The current leadership structure includes one party secretary, one dean, two deputy party secretaries (also serving as vice deans), and one vice dean. The college has a designated office and maintains other administrative departments under the parent institution, such as finance, teaching management, student affairs, and human resources.
The college has 11 sub-Party committees, 7 student Party branches, and 1 staff Party branch responsible for the development and Party-building work for both staff and students. The college continues to reform smoothly with the implementation of related administrative and teaching management documents.
3. Achievements
The Institute has always adhered to the guidance of the Provincial Education Committee, the university’s Party Committee, and local policies, with a focus on student-centered education. It integrates the important thoughts of Xi Jinping on education, striving to provide solid educational services while steadily advancing the college’s reforms.

- In 2011, the college Party Committee was honored as an “Advanced Grassroots Party Organization” by the Shiyan Municipal Party Committee.

Since its establishment, the Institute has continuously explored its talent cultivation goals, focusing on employment-oriented education with a core value of “quality-based, ability-centered” education. The Institute aims to cultivate high-quality applied medical and health professionals who are ethical, skilled, innovative, and have strong foundations. In 2018 alone, 20 projects were funded under the provincial-level Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program for College Students. The first national anatomical drawing competition saw the clinical students of the 2015 cohort win first prize.
The Institute’s focus on societal demand has led to numerous projects in response to the needs of the health industry and local development. Projects include “O-chun Bai Le Shuang,” a collaboration with local industries, as well as projects like “Resveratrol” and “Motherwort Health Pads,” which are aligned with national health trends. In 2018, 12 teams won bronze medals at the “Chuang Qingchun 2018 Hubei Province University Student Entrepreneurship Competition.”
