Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, formerly known as Luxun Art Academy, was founded in 1938 by the Communist Party of China. It is considered the "cradle of new Chinese art." The name of the academy and its motto, "Tension, seriousness, diligence, humility," were personally inscribed by Comrade Mao Zedong. The academy is the only institution in Northeast China with a strong faculty, a full range of academic programs, and a leading position in terms of educational standards and overall strength. It has distinctive characteristics and significant influence both domestically and internationally, making it a renowned institution in the field of higher arts education. In 2019, it was designated as a key university supported by Liaoning Province for the development of a first-class national university.
The academy currently has two campuses, in Shenyang and Dalian, covering a total area of 958,000 square meters. It has 7,478 full-time undergraduate and graduate students, and 919 staff members. Among the staff, 12 have received the State Council's special allowance, 1 is a national leader in philosophy and social sciences under the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," 1 is a national teaching master under the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," 2 are recognized for their excellence in both ethics and arts by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee, and 2 are part of the "Four Outstanding Talents" program. The Industrial Design Experimental Teaching Center is the only national-level industrial design teaching demonstration center among similar institutions in China.
The academy offers master's degree programs in Fine Arts, Calligraphy, Design, Art Studies, and Design Studies. Its programs in Chinese painting, painting, sculpture, product design, visual communication design, animation, photography, environmental design, fashion and apparel design, craft art, art studies, and digital media art have been recognized as national first-class undergraduate programs.
The academy is committed to building a contemporary art education structure that supports and integrates three major academic clusters: Fine Arts, Design Studies, and Humanities and Art. It plays an important role in constructing a new era of Chinese art education with distinctive characteristics. With its unique educational features, high-quality teaching, and artistic achievements, the academy contributes to the national development and cultural advancement, while maintaining extensive international collaborations with prestigious art schools around the world. It has become one of the most influential art academies in China’s higher education system.
