Could it be that…?/ Is it possible that…?
[1-1] to emphasize 反问句 fǎn wèn jù (a rhetorical negative question).
(难道)你不知道吗？
(難道)你不知道嗎？
( nán dào ) nǐ bù zhī dao ma ？
Don't you know it? (I thought that you knew it.)
[the speaker thought the listener should have known it, but the speaker
feels SURPRISED because the fact is the listener didn’t.]

[1-2]
(难道)你不爱我了吗？
(難道)你不愛我了嗎？
( nán dào ) nǐ bú ài wǒ le ma ？
Don't you love me [anymore]? (I thought that you loved me.)
[the speaker thought the listener should have loved him/her, but the speaker
feels SURPRISED because the fact is not what he/she thought to be.]

[2-1] to show a tone of assumption after a question
为什么你不吃蛋糕？难道你在减肥？
為什麼你不吃蛋糕? 難道你在減肥?
wèi shén me nǐ bù chī dàn gāo ？
nán dào nǐ zài jiǎn féi ？
Why didn’t you eat the cake? Could it be that you’re losing weight?
[The speaker is expressing a possible reason for his previous question.]

[2-2] to show a tone of assumption after a question
为什么你不说话？难道你不开心？
為什麼你不說話? 難道你不開心?
wèi shén me nǐ bù shuō huà ？ nán dào nǐ bù kāi xīn ？
Why didn’t you say something? Could it be that you’re not happy?
[The speaker is expressing a possible reason for his previous question.]

Practice: Use 难道 in the following sentences.
