About University

China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is a key national university under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. Jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Emergency Management, and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the university has been included in the "211 Project," the "985 Project Innovation Platform," and the national "Double First-Class" initiative. Among the first universities in China authorized to confer doctoral and master’s degrees, CUMT has an approved graduate school. It is located in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province—a historic and cultural city known as the "thoroughfare of five provinces"—with two campuses: Wenchang and Nanhu.

Academic Strength and Structure

CUMT has two national "Double First-Class" disciplines, one national first-level key discipline, eight national second-level key disciplines, and one nationally recognized key discipline in cultivation. The university boasts 21 first-level doctoral programs, five professional doctoral programs, 36 first-level master's programs, 20 professional master's programs, and 74 undergraduate majors. It serves over 23,900 full-time undergraduate students, 14,700 doctoral and master's students, and more than 850 international students. Additionally, the faculty includes over 3,570 members.

Historical Background

Established in 1909 as Jiaozuo School of Railroad and Mines, the institution was renamed Jiaozuo Institute of Technology in 1931. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, it relocated and merged with other institutions to form the National Northwest Institute of Technology. After several moves and name changes, it became China University of Mining and Technology in 1988, with Deng Xiaoping inscribing the school’s name. In 2003, its Beijing branch became an independent entity, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), marking the separation of two distinct academic entities.

Legacy and Spirit

Over its 115-year history, CUMT has relocated 14 times and undergone 12 name changes, enduring hardships yet maintaining its mission of excellence. The university embodies a spirit of "self-reliance, hard work, and pursuit of excellence." Historically, its mission included nurturing talent for national development, and today it emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and global engagement.

Academic Excellence

CUMT offers 74 undergraduate majors, with 35 recognized as national "Double First-Class" programs. It has 22 national-level courses and 40 listed as national first-class undergraduate courses. Since the turn of the century, the university has received 13 national teaching achievement awards and established numerous innovation platforms, including national-level labs and virtual teaching centers. Its "carbon neutrality," energy storage engineering, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things disciplines reflect its dedication to modern scientific challenges.

Research and Innovation

The university conducts cutting-edge research through five national key laboratories and numerous provincial and ministerial-level platforms. CUMT is committed to national strategic initiatives, including the dual-carbon strategy, intelligent mining, and ecological preservation. Its engineering and earth science fields rank among the global top 1‰ in ESI, with ten disciplines in the top 1%. The mining engineering discipline consistently ranks in the global QS Top 50 and was ranked 21st worldwide in 2024.

International Collaboration and Impact

CUMT actively engages in international exchanges, cooperating with nearly 100 overseas institutions. It has established partnerships under the "Belt and Road" initiative and joined UNESCO’s International Center for Mining Engineering Education. Additionally, it hosts globally influential conferences and joint research initiatives.

Campus and Environment

Situated by Yunlong Lake, CUMT’s two campuses cover over 4,200 acres, featuring lush greenery and diverse flora and fauna. Its library, recognized as one of China’s most beautiful university libraries, houses over 20 million volumes. The university promotes ecological sustainability and has earned multiple accolades for green campus initiatives.

Vision for the Future

CUMT aspires to become a world-class university with a focus on energy and resources by the mid-21st century. Guided by Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the university aims to contribute to national modernization and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through high-quality development and innovation.
