Handan University is located in Handan, a city in Hebei Province known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, being a famous historical city, an excellent tourist destination, the birthplace of Tai Chi, and the city of idioms and historical anecdotes. It is a public, full-time, ordinary undergraduate institution. The school's history dates back to 1905 when the Handan County Primary Normal School was established. It was upgraded to Handan Normal College in 1982, then to an undergraduate institution in 2004, and renamed Handan University. In 2012, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation, and in 2016, it was included in the list for the project to grant master's degree authorization in Hebei Province. In 2017, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation. In 2021, it was designated as one of the second batch of pilot universities for transformation and development in Hebei Province.
The university currently employs 1,248 staff members, including 308 professors and associate professors, and 966 faculty members with doctoral and master's degrees. The total number of full-time undergraduate students is 18,075, with an additional 5,732 students enrolled in adult education programs. The university has 20 secondary colleges (or centers) and offers 63 undergraduate programs, with 48 programs currently recruiting. These programs span 10 major disciplines. The campus covers 1,193 acres, and the total value of teaching and research equipment is 231 million RMB. The university library holds 1.71 million volumes of physical books. It is recognized as a national advanced unit for greening, a Ministry of Education's first batch of national bases for the inheritance of excellent traditional Chinese culture in general universities, and a civilized campus in Hebei Province.
The university’s fundamental mission is to foster virtue and talent, adhering to the service-oriented positioning of “Rooted in Handan, serving society, nurturing culture and education, integrating with industry.” It has a national postdoctoral research station in social sciences, a national first-class undergraduate program construction point, 11 provincial-level first-class program construction points, 3 provincial key disciplines, 2 national first-class courses, and 6 provincial first-class courses. It also boasts 27 national and provincial-level quality engineering projects, 4 provincial-level teaching achievement awards, and 20 provincial and municipal-level research platforms, along with 4 provincial-level popular science bases. In recent years, it has received approval for 30 national projects, including National Social Science Fund, National Natural Science Fund, and National Art Fund projects, and has won 46 provincial and above-level awards, including Hebei Province Science and Technology Progress Awards.
The university’s "Zhao Culture Research" column in its journal was selected for the Ministry of Education's Special Column Construction Project in 2014, and in 2023, it was included in the first batch of philosophy and social science journal special column construction by the Publicity Department of the CPC. The university has 8 programs—English, Chemistry, Preschool Education, Biological Sciences, Chinese Language and Literature, Special Education, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Education—that have passed the secondary certification for teacher training programs. Thirteen programs are included in the Ministry of Education's exemption list for teacher certification. Handan University has partnered with the Warsaw University of Ecology and Management in Poland to offer a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Ecology Engineering.
Students from Handan University have earned 1,795 national and provincial awards in subject competitions, the “Challenge Cup,” and “Internet Plus” competitions. The university’s brand events, such as the "Qingma Project" university student leadership training class, "Yanzhao Youth Speaks" inspirational speech contest, "Qingma Hongma Zha" youth lectures, and "Moral and Capable Lecture Hall," have been frequently reported by national media.
As part of its ambitious development in the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, Handan University is following the construction requirements outlined in the “China Education Modernization 2035” plan, with the goal of becoming a high-level, application-oriented university with distinctive regional features in the new era. The university is advancing towards the construction of a first-class university and first-class disciplines in the region, striving to become a master's degree-granting institution, focusing on the certification of teacher training programs, accelerating its transformation, and continuously enhancing its capacity to serve local development, ultimately promoting high-quality growth.
