Hankou University is a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, private, and full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education. Founded in 2000, its predecessor was the Hankou branch of Central China Normal University. In 2011, the school was restructured and renamed Hankou University after being approved by the Hubei Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first 17 independent colleges nationwide to be transformed into a regular private university. In 2014, the school was approved by the provincial education department to become one of the first among 32 similar institutions in the province to recruit students for second-tier undergraduate programs, and it is also one of the first private universities in Hubei to jointly recruit and train graduate students.
The main campus of the university is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, a major transportation hub, on the picturesque shores of Tangxun Lake, adjacent to the high-tech industrial cluster of "China Optical Valley." The location offers convenient transportation, beautiful surroundings, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful university campuses in Wuhan.
The university is well-equipped with infrastructure, consisting of three campuses in Wuhan, Jing Shan, and the UK. It covers more than 3,200 acres and has a building area of over 500,000 square meters. The university's library holds 1.54 million paper books and 2.5 million electronic books.
Hankou University has 13 colleges (including the Wales Trinity Saint David University Hankou University UK Graduate School) and one department, totaling 14 teaching units. It offers 31 undergraduate programs, covering seven academic disciplines: economics, law, education, literature, engineering, management, and arts. The university currently has more than 14,000 full-time undergraduate students, including 11,449 undergraduates.
The university boasts a strong teaching staff, with experienced and highly qualified faculty members. There are 779 full-time faculty members, with 42% holding senior professional titles, 10% holding professor-level titles, 10% holding doctoral degrees, and 87% having a master's degree or higher. The faculty includes one expert receiving a special allowance from the State Council, one provincial and ministerial-level expert with outstanding contributions, one national excellent teacher, and four Hubei provincial teaching masters.
The university has two key provincial disciplines, seven provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs, three provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, one provincial strategic talent cultivation project, one Jingu Excellence Engineer Collaborative Education Program, and one MOOC pilot project in computer science. The university also has 12 provincial-level key courses, two provincial-level teaching achievement awards, three provincial-level teaching teams, and six provincial-level excellent grassroots teaching organizations. In addition, it undertakes 87 provincial-level and national-level research projects, including collaborative education projects, and leads in similar institutions across the province.
Hankou University has always adhered to the education policy of the Communist Party, following the motto of "Dare to be the first, seek truth from facts, aim high, and pursue excellence." It continually updates its educational philosophy. Since its founding, the university has graduated nearly 70,000 students, including national role models such as Liu Pei (National Moral Model), Cai Wenxia and Nie Xiaodan (National College Student Self-improvement Stars), Xie Wei (Outstanding Teacher of Jingchu), Du Zhihong and Deng Zhujun (Outstanding Students of Hubei), Yang Gaofei (Hero of Social Justice), Ren Zhiqiang (Excellent Youth League Member), and Zhao Yibo (one of the five founders of Didi Chuxing).
The university's achievements have won wide social recognition. In recent years, its admission scores have been 40 points higher than the provincial average, and its admission and enrollment rates are among the top in similar institutions in Hubei.
The university adheres to the philosophy of "student-centered education" and places a strong emphasis on cultivating virtue and moral character. It has created a rich variety of cultural and sports activities to help students develop well-rounded personal qualities and improve their physical and mental well-being. It has established campus cultural platforms such as the Art Festival, Science and Culture Festival, Club Culture Festival, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship Culture Festival. Over the past three years, the university has won 1,340 awards, including 360 national-level awards and 980 provincial-level awards. In 2018, it won a silver medal in the "Creation of Youth" National College Students Entrepreneurship Competition. In 2020, it won first place in the National College Students E-commerce Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship Challenge. In 2022, it won third place in the 17th "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. In 2023, it won 11 national-level awards in the 16th China College Students Computer Design Competition, and in 2024, it won a national first prize in the 15th National College Student Mathematics Competition (Non-Mathematics Major).
The university’s scientific research efforts have also achieved impressive results. In the past three years, the university has undertaken 558 research projects at various levels, including one Humanities and Social Sciences project from the Ministry of Education, one Natural Science Foundation project from Hubei Province, four general projects from the Hubei and Wuhan Social Science Foundations, and three key projects from the Hubei Education Science Planning. The university has published 72 books, including 32 textbooks, and 61 high-level academic papers, with 31 of them indexed by SCI and EI. The university has been granted 41 national patents, including one invention patent.
Hankou University has also achieved remarkable success in international exchanges and cooperation. It has established the UK Graduate School with Wales Trinity Saint David University and carries out joint doctoral and master’s degree programs. It has set up offices in France and South Korea, and it enrolls short-term exchange students from more than 20 countries and regions. The university has established cooperative relationships with over 50 universities and institutions in more than 20 countries, sending over 300 faculty and students abroad for further study or degree programs.
The university has won numerous honors, including "National Top Ten Independent Colleges," "National Demonstrative Independent Colleges," "Top Ten Famous Private Colleges in China," "Advanced Unit of Employment Work in Hubei Higher Education," "Pilot Unit for Party Building in Hubei Private Colleges," "Advanced Unit for Ideological and Political Education in Hubei Universities," and "Red Flag Youth League Committee of the Year."
