Huaihua University is located in Huaihua, Hunan Province, often referred to as "a seed that changes the world." Nestled at the foot of Xuefeng Mountain and along the graceful Shenhe River, the university is an application-oriented regional undergraduate institution in China's "Southwest Pearl." Founded in 1958 as Qianyang Normal School, it merged with the Qianyang branch of Hunan Agricultural University in 1982. It was renamed Huaihua Normal College in 1983, and in 1998 began offering undergraduate programs. In 2000, Qianyang Normal was fully incorporated into the university. In 2002, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to become a full-time general undergraduate institution and renamed Huaihua University. In 2004, it gained the authority to confer bachelor’s degrees, and in 2012, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation. In 2019, it passed the Ministry's undergraduate teaching audit, and in 2021, it was approved for a doctoral program development project. In 2022, the university was selected for the Ministry of Education’s Teacher Education Collaborative Quality Improvement Program, and in 2023, it was approved as a national health school development unit and as the Hunan Provincial Intellectual Property Center for Higher Education. In recent years, the university has been recognized with multiple honors, including national awards for spiritual civilization, energy-saving, and advanced ethnic sports, as well as various provincial titles such as "Civilized Window," "Civilized University," and "Model University for Party Building."
The university has two campuses and 23 functional departments and teaching support institutions. It has 16 colleges offering 50 undergraduate programs and serves over 20,000 full-time students. The university offers a wide range of programs, including in fields such as Landscape Architecture, Social Work, Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Software Engineering, Logistics, Business English, Physical Education, Music, Tourism Management, Artificial Intelligence, and more. Students come from 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China.
Huaihua University has established international partnerships with 37 universities in 18 countries and regions, including the United States, the UK, Australia, Germany, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and others. It has engaged in significant collaborations in areas such as joint programs, scientific research, faculty exchanges, and student exchanges. Over 100 international students from countries like the United States, Spain, Russia, Pakistan, and Nepal have studied at Huaihua University.
The university boasts a number of prestigious academic designations, including one national-level characteristic program, one national-level comprehensive reform pilot program, and five national first-class undergraduate programs. It also has many provincial-level distinctions, including four application-oriented disciplines, seven featured programs, and 28 provincial first-class undergraduate programs. It has developed 16 practical teaching centers, including three provincial-level demonstration centers, one provincial-level virtual laboratory, and 233 off-campus practice bases.
In the past five years, the university's faculty has published 3,586 papers, including 749 high-quality papers. It has been granted 1,160 patents and has secured 498 research projects at the provincial and national levels, including 24 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. The university has won numerous awards, including first-class provincial natural science and social science awards, and students have won top honors in national and provincial competitions.
Over 160,000 graduates have been trained by Huaihua University, many of whom have become leaders in government, education, and research institutions. Notable alumni include Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Xi Nanhua (Class of 1978), renowned writer Wang Yuewen (Class of 1981), and famous singer Chen Sisi (Class of 1990).
Looking ahead, Huaihua University strives for excellence. With its motto, "Embrace Benevolence and Influence the World," the university is committed to developing application-oriented disciplines, research, and talent, aiming to be a regional leader in higher education. The university has set ambitious goals for its development, focusing on serving Hunan Province, Southwest China, and the entire nation, with an emphasis on industry-university cooperation and regional economic contributions. Through these efforts, Huaihua University is working toward becoming a high-level application-oriented university in the region.
