Huanggang Normal University is located in Huanggang, Hubei Province, a key cultural hub and one of China's most livable cities, and is the first and most prestigious institution of higher education in Huanggang, with a population of 7.3 million. It is a full-time public undergraduate university under the administration of the People's Government of Hubei Province.
The university traces its origins to the "Huangzhou Prefecture Normal School" founded in 1905, evolving through various stages, including the "Provincial Huanggang Rural Normal School," "Hubei Provincial Huanggang Normal School," and "Huanggang Normal Higher Vocational School." In March 1999, the university was upgraded to Huanggang Normal University, a full-fledged undergraduate institution, with approval from the Ministry of Education. In October 2011, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the university to independently offer Master's degree programs in education. After more than a century of development, the university has grown into a multidisciplinary institution with 11 academic fields, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and arts. It offers both master's and undergraduate programs, with a comprehensive academic system. The university has 20 teaching colleges and offers 70 undergraduate programs. The university spans 2,012 acres and enrolls students from 22 provinces across China, with a total of 19,414 full-time students.
The university is actively implementing its talent-driven development strategy, focusing on the "Two Highs" development strategy to strengthen faculty and recruit talent. It has implemented a "100 PhD Talent Introduction Project" and employs 1,191 full-time faculty members, including 163 senior professors, 409 associate professors, and 503 PhD holders. The university also has over 100 national and provincial-level honor experts. Additionally, the university invites renowned scholars and professors from prestigious universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and others to serve as part-time professors. In 2023, the Huangmei Opera Cultural Heritage and Innovation Teaching Team was selected for the third batch of "National Model Teaching Teams in Universities."
The university has steadily advanced its teaching reform and quality assurance projects. It currently has one national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, nine national first-class program construction points, two national first-class courses, and seven programs certified by the Ministry of Education for teacher education. It has also established provincial-level projects for teacher training, research and development, and industry-university cooperation. The university has won 43 provincial-level or above teaching achievement awards and has developed more than 70 high-quality courses.
The quality of talent training continues to improve, with students winning top prizes in competitions such as the International Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM/ICM), the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition (where the university has won national awards for 10 consecutive years, including eight first-place awards), the "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the "Challenge Cup" and other significant competitions. In recent years, students have excelled in the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Academic Technology Competition, the ACM-ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest, and the "Tianjiabing Cup" National Teacher Training Skills Competition, among others.
Since 2006, the university has partnered with universities like Wuhan University of Technology, Hubei University, and Shanghai Normal University to jointly train graduate students. In 2012, the university began independently training Master of Education students and has enrolled 613 education Master's students, with 797 graduate students currently enrolled. The university has 210 education Master's advisors and has received over 70 national and provincial-level awards for teaching skills and academic achievements.
In terms of scientific research and social service, Huanggang Normal University has established national research bases, including the "Chinese Outstanding Traditional Culture Inheritance Base" and "Rural Professional Technology Association Science and Technology Farm," among others. It has a strong research profile, with 46 national natural science projects, 37 national social science projects, and 340 provincial projects. The university has also been awarded numerous patents and research achievements in fields such as education, technology, and social services.
The university maintains extensive international exchanges with over 50 countries and regions. It has established academic collaborations with universities in Japan, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and others. The university has hosted over 300 foreign experts and scholars and has sent more than 310 academic staff abroad for research and collaboration. It has also established Confucius Institutes abroad, including a project with Vyatka State University in Russia.
Huanggang Normal University graduates are highly sought after by employers, with a graduate employment rate consistently above 94%. The university has produced numerous prominent alumni, including many leaders in education, government, and business, particularly in the Huanggang area, where more than 80% of secondary school principals and core faculty members are graduates of the university.
In recent years, the university has received numerous prestigious honors, including "National Demonstration School for Language and Character Standardization," "National Green Organization," "National Advanced Collective for Employee Relations," "Top 50 Media Influences in Chinese Universities," and "Hubei Province Civilized Units."
