Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology is located in Baotou, a city known for being a first batch national civilized city and a beautiful steel city in the grasslands. The university specializes in metallurgy, mining, coal, and rare earths, with a focus on engineering and a combination of disciplines such as science, literature, management, economics, law, arts, and education. It offers a comprehensive talent development system at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
Founded in 1956, the institution began as Baotou Steel Industrial School and Baotou Construction Engineering School, affiliated with the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. In 1958, the two schools merged to form Baotou Institute of Technology, which was renamed Baotou Steel Institute in 1960. The university became a degree-granting institution in 1991 and has since evolved into a multi-disciplinary university. In 1998, it was transferred to the management of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, operating as a joint project with both the central and regional governments. In 2003, it was renamed Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology, and in 2013, it became a doctoral degree-granting institution.
The university currently has more than 26,000 students, with over 23,000 undergraduates and over 3,300 graduate students. It offers 67 major programs across 20 teaching departments. The institution is home to multiple national and regional-level top programs, with several recognized for excellence in education, including engineering education certifications and specialized reforms.
The university excels in student employment and entrepreneurship, with a significant number of awards in science and technology competitions, including national recognition for entrepreneurship initiatives. It is also highly active in sports, with students winning numerous national and international medals.
In terms of research, the university has achieved substantial recognition with awards in science and technology and is involved in numerous national and regional research projects. It has developed various scientific and technological innovations and holds patents in multiple fields.
The faculty consists of over 1,400 teaching staff, including many distinguished scholars and professionals, and the institution emphasizes the development of high-quality, specialized academic teams. It has a strong commitment to international collaboration, with partnerships established with over 100 universities and research institutions in 36 countries.
Standing at a new historical starting point, Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology aims to further its commitment to quality development, focusing on high-level applied research and striving to become a regionally leading, nationally renowned, and internationally distinctive institution.
