Liaocheng University is located in the national historical and cultural city of Liaocheng, Shandong Province, known as the "Water City of the North" and the "Ancient Capital of the Grand Canal." The university traces its origins to the Liaocheng Branch of Shandong Normal University, established in November 1974. It was officially recognized as Liaocheng Normal College by the State Council in July 1981, and renamed Liaocheng University in February 2002 with approval from the Ministry of Education. The university is a key institution for the cultivation of master's degree students and the recommendation of outstanding graduates for higher education, and is a key player in the development of applied undergraduate education in Shandong Province. The university cooperates with many domestic and international universities to jointly train doctoral students. Over half a century, the university has adhered to its motto of "Dedication, Knowledge, Pragmatism, Innovation," and has fostered the "Liao Da Spirit" of "Respect for Teaching, Pursuit of Learning, Integrity, and Progress." It has produced numerous outstanding talents who have contributed to national construction and social-economic development, with over 230,000 alumni spread across the globe.
Currently, the university has 24 colleges, 9 research institutes, 26 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 21 master's professional degree categories, and 75 undergraduate programs. Its academic disciplines cover 13 major fields, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management, art, medicine, and interdisciplinary studies. The university's programs in chemistry, engineering, materials science, and computer science are ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators).
The university currently has more than 34,000 full-time students, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. There are over 2,000 full-time faculty members, including 1,200 with doctoral degrees, 224 senior professors, and 798 associate professors. The faculty includes 3 dual-appointed academicians, 25 experts recognized by the "Taishan Scholars" program, and 5 overseas experts. The university boasts a number of nationally recognized educators, including 61 experts who have received accolades such as the National Excellent Teacher Award, and 1 national-level teaching team and 8 provincial-level teaching teams.
Liaocheng University has 5 national and provincial research platforms, including the Ministry of Education's country and regional studies institutions, national laboratories, and engineering research centers. It is also home to 9 key provincial laboratories and research centers, 6 provincial social science research bases, and 4 key think tanks in Shandong. Its 12 provincial key disciplines include cultural and art sciences, and the university also hosts a variety of research innovation teams focused on applied sciences and engineering.
In recent years, the university has achieved significant success in research, winning 6 national awards for scientific and technological progress, and publishing more than 10,000 high-level academic papers. The university has established a strong capacity for societal service, securing over 390 patents and transferring more than 60 technologies.
The university offers 4 national-level characteristic programs and 9 national first-class undergraduate programs, along with 17 national-level courses, including bilingual and online open courses. It has also garnered national and provincial teaching awards, including 6 national teaching achievement awards and over 100 provincial teaching awards. Liaocheng University excels in competitions, with over 6,000 students winning awards annually in national contests such as the "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the "Challenge Cup."
Liaocheng University has also embraced an internationalized approach, with partnerships with more than 100 universities and research institutions across 20 countries and regions, including Russia, the US, and Europe. It has established two Confucius Institutes in Jordan and Samoa and has been entrusted by the Ministry of Education to carry out educational aid programs in these countries.
The campus spans nearly 3,000 acres with over 820,000 square meters of building space. The university's library covers nearly 50,000 square meters and holds over 2.66 million paper books and 3.83 million electronic books. The campus is renowned for its beautiful environment, rich academic atmosphere, and is considered an ideal place for study and research, earning the reputation of "Studying at Liaocheng University."
The university has been recognized with numerous national and provincial honors, including "National Green Model Unit," "National Advanced Unit for College Students' Social Practice," and "Shandong Provincial Advanced Educational Unit."
