Ningxia Normal University is located in Guyuan City, in the southern part of Ningxia, at the foot of the historical Liupan Mountain. It is managed by the People's Government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and is the only teacher-training undergraduate university in Ningxia.
The university’s predecessor was Liupan Mountain University, established in 1975. Former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and then Deputy Secretary of the Guyuan District Party Committee, Hu Qili, served as the head of the university's preparatory group. In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, Guyuan Normal College was established on the foundation of Liupan Mountain University. It was renamed Guyuan Normal Higher College in 1994 and later approved by the Ministry of Education to be renamed Ningxia Normal College in 2006, upgrading to an undergraduate institution. In 2012, the university was approved for the "Service National Special Talent Training Program" and became a pilot unit for master’s degree programs. In 2013, it started enrolling students for master’s degrees and passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching quality evaluation. In the same year, the university also gained qualifications for training local public-funded teachers. In 2016, it became one of the first universities in Ningxia to pilot comprehensive application transformation and became a key unit for building "first-class" disciplines in western China. In 2018, it was approved as a master’s degree-granting institution and a pilot university for high-level undergraduate education and AI-driven teacher development. In 2019, it successfully passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching review. In November 2021, it was approved as a university for piloting undergraduate-level vocational education. In 2022, the university was selected for the "National Teacher Education Collaborative Quality Improvement Program" by the Ministry of Education. In 2023, the Ningxia government’s Degree Committee Office included Ningxia Normal University in the 2024-2026 doctoral degree-granting project construction list. In May 2024, it was officially renamed Ningxia Normal University, approved by the Ministry of Education.
Over its 40+ years, the university has deeply rooted itself in the mountainous southern region of Ningxia, dedicating itself to serving regional economic and social development and meeting the spiritual needs of the people. Generations of faculty members have worked diligently, passed down the torch of education, upheld the revolutionary spirit of "only those who reach the Great Wall are real heroes," and adhered to traditions of "inheritance of red genes, patriotism as the main line, pragmatic teaching, and focused service to the grassroots." The university has trained more than 50,000 professionals, earning the title of "Talent Base under Liupan Mountain, Teacher Training Cradle in Southern Ningxia."
