Zunyi Normal College is located in the historically and culturally renowned city of Zunyi, which is famous both domestically and internationally as the "Red Holy Land" and "The Most Beautiful Zunyi." It is an educational institution with a history of over a century. The college traces its origins back to the establishment of Zunyi Primary Normal School in 1907. In 1936, it was renamed "Provincial Zunyi Normal School." In 1958, it became Zunyi Normal College, and in 2001, it upgraded to Zunyi Normal University and began offering undergraduate programs. In 2007, the university passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation with favorable results. In 2011, the school was rated as a "National Civilized Unit," and in the same year, it was approved as a Red Classic Art Education Demonstration Base by the Ministry of Education. In 2013, the university established the "Research Center for the Revolutionary Spirit and Cultural Resources of the Communist Party of China," a Ministry of Education humanities and social sciences key research base. In 2014, it became one of the first universities in Guizhou to be recognized as a "Culturally Distinctive University." In 2019, it became the leading university in Guizhou for the Ministry of Education’s “One Province, One Plan Ideological and Political Course” collective action. The university was also one of the first local universities to have a provincial-level key Marxism College. In 2021, it was approved as a “National College Graduate Employment Training Base” by the Ministry of Education, and in 2022, it was selected as a “National Demonstration Unit for Ethnic Unity and Progress” in the ninth batch of evaluations.
The university covers an area of over 2,100 acres, with nearly 1,000 acres of its northern campus already completed (and the southern campus, covering 1,100 acres, under planning and construction). The total building area exceeds 900,000 square meters. Zunyi Normal College has 18 schools (teaching departments), offering 51 undergraduate programs across nine academic fields, including literature, science, engineering, management, and agriculture. It enrolls students from 25 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, with 14,851 full-time students currently in attendance. The university also admits international students from countries such as Laos, Vietnam, Russia, and Kazakhstan, with 56 students currently enrolled.
The university has a faculty of 1,120 staff, including 239 doctoral holders, 530 master’s degree holders, 170 senior professors, 8 third-level professors, 391 associate professors, and 1 faculty member who enjoys the State Council Special Allowance. There are also 3 professors receiving provincial government allowances and 2 experts under provincial management, as well as 9 city-level experts.
Zunyi Normal College currently offers 16 academic disciplines, including one first-class discipline at the provincial level, one provincial key specialty discipline, and 5 provincial key disciplines, along with 6 key supporting disciplines. The university has 5 national-level first-class undergraduate programs and 12 provincial-level first-class programs. It also offers 1 national-level first-class undergraduate course and 41 provincial-level "Golden Courses." Additionally, it has a provincial-level first-class teaching team and 12 provincial-level teaching platforms.
The university has established significant research bases and platforms, including a key Ministry of Education humanities and social sciences research base, a Red Classic Art Education Demonstration Base, a national Family Education Innovation Practice Base established by the All-China Women’s Federation and the Ministry of Education, as well as multiple provincial-level research centers and innovation teams.
After over a century of development, the university has cultivated the values of "Thick Virtue, Cultivating People" as its motto, with the teaching philosophy of “Honoring Principles, Pursuing Knowledge.” The university’s culture encourages academic excellence and moral integrity, with an emphasis on the simultaneous cultivation of both character and knowledge.
