阿姨，你摸我干什么？

Āyí, nǐ mō wǒ gànshénme?

Auntie, why are you touching me?

我们为啥要在庙里过中秋啊？

Wǒmen wèi shá yào zài miào lǐ guò Zhōngqiū a?

Why do we celebrate Mid-Autumn in the temple?

还不是因为师傅们心好，把我们这些回不去家的人...

Hái bu shì yīnwèi shīfumen xīn hǎo, bǎ wǒmen zhèxiē huí bu qù jiā de rén...

Isn't it because the masters are kind, taking in those of us who can't go home...

• 月饼 (yuèbǐng): mooncake
• 中秋 (Zhōngqiū): Mid-Autumn Festival
• 家乡 (jiāxiāng): hometown
• 阿姨 (āyí): auntie (term of address for a woman of mother's generation)
• 师傅 (shīfu): master (here, monks)
• 庙 (miào): temple
• 咸 (xián): savory, salty
• 甜 (tián): sweet
• 摸 (mō): to touch, to stroke
• 乱七八糟 (luànqībāzāo): messy, all mixed up, nonsense
• 婵娟 (chánjuān): a beautiful woman; (poetic) the moon

哇！我要莲蓉的！我要豆沙的！

Wa! Wǒ yào liánróng de! Wǒ yào dòushā de!

Wow! I want lotus seed paste! I want red bean paste!

菠萝月饼其实是冬瓜做的。

Bōluó yuèbǐng qíshí shì dōngguā zuò de.

Pineapple mooncakes are actually made of winter melon.

月饼好吃，好甜... 我记得家乡的月饼是咸的，里边还有火腿。这月饼很好吃，但就是，不咸。

Yuèbǐng hǎochī, hǎo tián... Wǒ jìde jiāxiāng de yuèbǐng shì xián de, lǐbian hái yǒu huǒtuǐ. Zhè yuèbǐng hěn hǎochī, dàn jiùshì, bù xián.

The mooncake is delicious, so sweet... I remember hometown mooncakes are savory, with ham inside. This mooncake is very tasty, but it's just... not savory.

这里就是我家。

Zhèli jiùshì wǒ jiā.

This is my home.

• 干什么 (gànshénme): "What to do?" or "Why?" (in questions). Ex: 你摸我干什么？ (Why are you touching me?)
• 为啥 (wèi shá): Colloquial for "why" (为什么 wèishénme).
• 还不是因为 (hái bu shì yīnwèi)...: Rhetorical question "Isn't it because..." implying obviousness.
• 其实是...做的 (qíshí shì...zuò de): "Actually it's made of..."
• 但就是 (dàn jiùshì)...: "But it's just that..." expressing a slight reservation or contrast.

你们说是月亮远还是家乡远呢？

Nǐmen shuō shì yuèliang yuǎn háishì jiāxiāng yuǎn ne?

Do you say the moon is farther, or hometown is farther?

月亮远！你们都是从家乡来的，但没人是从月亮上来的。

Yuèliang yuǎn! Nǐmen dōu shì cóng jiāxiāng lái de, dàn méi rén shì cóng yuèliang shàng lái de.

The moon is farther! You all came from your hometowns, but no one came from the moon.

可抬头就能看见月亮，却无论如何都看不到家乡。

Kě táitóu jiù néng kànjiàn yuèliang, què wúlùn rúhé dōu kàn bu dào jiāxiāng.

But you can see the moon just by looking up, yet no matter what, you can't see your hometown.

• Moon Symbolism: Represents reunion, completeness, and is often associated with homesickness when far from family.
