差(一)点(儿) indicates:
(1) the speaker's negative feelings/past tense/but didn’t
(2) adv.

差不多: almost; almost the same
(1) for an estimation/a fact
(2) adv./adj.

Let’s compare:
教室里差不多有十个人。(fact/estimation)
教室裡差不多有十個人。
jiào shì lǐ chà bù duō yǒu shí gè rén .
There are almost 10 people in the classroom.

梦梦今天早上差一点儿迟到了。(past/negative feeling /but didn’t)
夢夢今天早上差一點兒遲到了。
