The Winter Solstice is one of the most important solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar and a traditional festival. To this day, many regions in China still maintain the custom of celebrating it. The Winter Solstice, also known as "Winter Festival" or "Changzhi Festival," was identified over two thousand years ago during the Spring and Autumn period through solar observations, making it the first solar term established among the 24 solar terms. It usually falls on December 22 or 23 of the Gregorian calendar, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient people believed that the Winter Solstice represented the "extreme of yin and the birth of yang," symbolizing a new beginning. In ancient times, it was considered a significant festival, with the saying "The Winter Solstice is as important as the New Year." People held celebratory activities during this time. Today, northern regions have traditions of eating dumplings and wontons, while southern regions enjoy rice balls or long noodles. In some places, people also conduct ancestor worship ceremonies to express their remembrance of loved ones.
The food customs of Winter Solstice are diverse, with dumplings and glutinous rice balls being the most representative. In the Jiangnan region, eating glutinous rice balls is popular, as they symbolize "reunion" and "completeness," and are also called "Winter Solstice Balls." People often use these rice balls to worship ancestors and pray for blessings, then share them with the family, signifying "adding years" and marking the beginning of a new year. Different regions have their own specialties, such as steamed rice cakes and fermented rice balls, enriching the culture of Winter Solstice and expressing people's good wishes.
