Changzhou University is located in Changzhou, Jiangsu, a historically rich cultural city in the prosperous Jiangnan region. It is a full-time undergraduate university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. It is one of the provincial-level universities and a key institution under Jiangsu's High-level University Development Plan.
Historical Development
The university was founded in 1978, initially as the Wuxi and Changzhou branches of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology. In 1981, it was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Chemical Technology with the approval of the State Council. In 1984, it adopted a joint management mechanism between the Jiangsu Provincial Government and Sinopec. Renamed Jiangsu Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Technology in 1992, it was under the direct management of Sinopec Corporation. The university transitioned to a joint central-local management system in 2000, primarily overseen by Jiangsu Province. It was renamed Jiangsu Polytechnic University in 2002 and received its current name, Changzhou University, in 2010, following approval from the Ministry of Education. Over 46 years of development, the university has established a comprehensive bachelor's, master's, and doctoral education system and multi-tiered research and social service frameworks. In 2020, it ranked 129th in China according to the Soft Science China University Rankings.
