Huanghuai University is a provincial full-time public undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education in 2004. The university is located in Zhumadian, Henan Province, which is known as the “heart of Henan” and “the center of the world.” With a history of 53 years, the university is a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education’s application-oriented university reform strategy, the Vice-Chairman unit of the China Applied Technology Universities (Colleges) Alliance, one of the first demonstration application-oriented undergraduate institutions in Henan Province, a key unit for the development of master’s degree programs in Henan, and the first recipient of the "Civilized Campus" award in Henan Province.
The university covers 2,760 acres and consists of 18 colleges, offering programs in ten disciplines, including engineering, natural sciences, management, economics, literature, arts, law, agriculture, education, and medicine. The university currently offers 58 undergraduate programs, including Computer Science and Technology, and New Energy Science and Engineering, which are enrolled at the first batch of undergraduate admissions. The university has 13 provincial key disciplines, 3 national first-class program construction points, 15 provincial first-class program construction points, 3 national first-class courses, and 15 national and provincial off-campus practical teaching bases. The university has 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 27 research and innovation platforms, including key laboratories, engineering technology research centers, international joint laboratories, and humanities and social sciences research bases. The full-time student enrollment is over 22,000. The university employs 1,672 staff members, including 618 teachers with senior professional titles, 380 doctoral degree holders, and 532 “dual-qualified” faculty members (professionals with both academic and industry expertise). Over 200 faculty members include experts receiving special government allowances, provincial outstanding experts, and national and provincial academic leaders, among others. The "Civil Engineering Teacher Team" was selected as one of the first “National Model Teacher Teams” in Chinese universities.
The university adheres to a "local, application-oriented, open" education orientation and deepens the integration of industry, academia, and research, as well as collaboration with local governments and enterprises. It has jointly established modern industry colleges with businesses, such as the "Waterproof Materials and Engineering Industry College," the "New Energy and Connected Vehicles Industry College," the "Building Waterproofing and Protection Industry College," and the "Raw Material Drug Green Preparation Industry College," which have been approved as provincial key modern industry colleges. The university also offers a wide range of programs in fields like artificial intelligence, rural design, and more, and it has established 13 "Beautiful Village" demonstration sites.
The university collaborates with institutions such as Zhengzhou University, Henan University, Xinyang Normal University, and Zhongyuan University of Technology in joint graduate training programs, with nearly 300 master’s students having been trained so far. Since 2005, the university has engaged in exchange and cooperation with over 20 international institutions. Currently, the university has 5 Sino-foreign joint education programs, with more than 1,100 students studying abroad and 90 international students enrolled. The "Huanghuai-Mysore International Software Engineering College" is part of Henan Province’s “Belt and Road” education action plan. The university has been selected as one of the provincial institutions for international education development. Since 2014, the university has hosted the “International Forum on Industry-Education Integration Development Strategy” for ten consecutive sessions, which has established a strong brand influence.
The university continues to promote innovation and entrepreneurship education and has been recognized as one of the first "Demonstration Universities for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform" in China. It is also a national-level innovation and entrepreneurship model school, a national-level maker space, and a national-level technology enterprise incubator. Ten students have been selected as “Top 100 National College Student Entrepreneurship Heroes,” and two graduates have been named “Henan Province College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Models.” The Henan Province Higher Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Management Service Center is based at the university.
In recent years, the university has received high attention and support from leading officials, including Chen Changzhi, former Vice-Chairman of the 11th and 12th National People's Congress Standing Committee; Lou Yangsheng, Party Secretary of Henan Province; Sun Yao, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education; Zhu Zhiwen, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education; and Lu Xin, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education and President of the China Vocational and Technical Education Society, who have all visited the university and expressed high expectations for its development.
Looking to the future, Huanghuai University will continue to be guided by Xi Jinping's Thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implement the spirit of the 20th Party Congress and the National Education Conference, uphold the mission of cultivating talent for the Party and the country, and align with the strategic goals and development plans set out in the university’s Fourth Party Congress. The university will adhere to its motto "Virtue, Knowledge, Practice, Self-improvement," and promote the spirit of Huanghuai, which emphasizes “striving as the only choice.” Focusing on the fundamental task of moral education, the university will strengthen its commitment to first-class standards and high-quality development, highlight its application-oriented characteristics, enhance the quality of talent training, improve service to local development, and accelerate the construction of a high-level application-oriented university with a focus on engineering, multi-disciplinary coordination, and distinctive features.
