Jiangsu Second Normal University is a provincial public undergraduate institution focused on teacher education. Its predecessor, Jiangsu Educational College, was established in 1952 and was one of the 17 public universities in Jiangsu Province during the early years of the People's Republic of China. In 1959, the university became the first among provincial-level education colleges in China to offer general undergraduate education. In 2013, with approval from the Ministry of Education, the school transitioned into a regular undergraduate institution and was renamed Jiangsu Second Normal University. Over the past 70 years, the faculty and students have been dedicated to teaching, contributing to the country's educational development. The university has cultivated a fine tradition of "resilience, self-improvement, strengthening education and fostering teachers, loyalty and responsibility," and embodies the essence of its motto: "Respect Virtue and Professionalism, Seek Truth and Innovation." It has continued the spirit of teacher education with the belief that "a teacher must be scholarly and morally upright," making significant contributions to the country's educational undertakings.
The university currently has two campuses: Shiqiu and Caochangmen, covering a total area of 718,700 square meters. It consists of 15 colleges and has approximately 13,000 full-time undergraduate students. More than 40% of the faculty hold high-level academic titles or doctorates, including recipients of the Ministry of Publicity's "Young Talent in Ideological and Cultural Propaganda," experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, members of the Ministry of Education's Teaching Advisory Committee, national and provincial inspectors, and others, with a total of 60 such individuals.
The university is distinguished for its teacher education programs, with teacher education students accounting for about 68% of the student body. It is a key institution for the National Excellent Teacher Training Program and serves as a training base for key primary and secondary school teachers and principals, as well as a training base for the Ministry of Education’s leadership program for primary and secondary school principals. It is also the only teacher education reform experimental base in Jiangsu Province. The university hosts several provincial-level training centers, including the Jiangsu Provincial Teacher Training Center, the Education Administrative Cadre Training Center, and the Teacher Qualification Certification Guidance Center.
The university offers 36 undergraduate programs, 17 of which are in teacher education. It has 5 national first-class undergraduate programs, 16 provincial-level first-class programs, 2 provincial-level industry-education integration brand programs, 1 program under the Excellence in Engineering Education and Training 2.0 initiative, 4 provincial brand programs, 3 key programs, and 6 specialized programs. It has 4 key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, 3 provincial-level teaching teams, and 2 key research bases for philosophy and social sciences. It also has 1 provincial engineering research center and is home to the only provincial-level think tank dedicated to education. The university has 5 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 18 provincial-level first-class courses, 3 experimental teaching and practice education centers, 19 key textbooks, and 11 provincial-level online open courses. In recent years, the university has won 2 national first-place teaching achievement awards, 4 second-place awards, and 5 provincial first-place teaching achievement awards, among other honors. In the past three years, students have won over 900 awards at the provincial and national levels in various academic, cultural, and sports competitions, including two Grand Prizes in the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. The university also ranks at the top in Jiangsu Province for awards in the Teacher Education Skills Competition, with 104 awards in total.
The university adheres to an open education approach and has established cooperative relationships with over 40 universities and research institutions in more than 10 countries and regions. It has set up several centers and bases, including an Academic Workstation for Academicians, the Russian Cultural Center, the Spanish Cultural Center, and a Cross-Strait Chinese Opera and National Culture Exchange Base. The university has also been approved as a National Research Center for Area Studies by the Ministry of Education. The university collaborates with over 300 external internship, practice, and training bases across primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, industries, enterprises, and research institutions, both within Jiangsu and beyond.
Standing at a new historical starting point, the university will continue to be guided by Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, deeply study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and promote the spirit of education. The university will courageously shoulder the mission of teacher education and strive toward becoming a high-level, research-oriented teacher training university with significant domestic influence and distinctive teacher education characteristics.
