Minnan University of Science and Technology (MUST), established in 1998, was officially upgraded to a general undergraduate higher education institution in 2008 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it was granted the authority to award bachelor’s degrees, and in 2016, it successfully passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation.
Location and Campus
Located in Quanzhou, Fujian Province—a historic cultural city, renowned hometown of overseas Chinese, and the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road—the university is situated in the scenic Baogai Mountain area of the coastal city of Shishi on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait. The campus covers more than 1,100 acres with a total building area of over 600,000 square meters. It has over 18,000 full-time students and more than 1,200 faculty and staff members.
Academic Focus and Structure
Adhering to its mission of being application-oriented, regional, open, and distinctive, MUST serves the local region of Quanzhou, extends its reach across Fujian, and radiates nationwide. The university comprises 12 teaching units, including the Schools of Optoelectronics and Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Construction, Fashion and Art Design, Information Engineering, Economics and Management, Foreign Languages, and Education. It offers 44 undergraduate programs across various disciplines, such as Mechanical Design and Automation, Robotics, Intelligent Construction, Financial Management, and Digital Media Art, forming a multidisciplinary system with engineering at its core, complemented by natural sciences, economics, management, arts, and education.
Guided by the founding philosophy of providing a secure and valuable environment for every student’s growth, the university aims to cultivate high-quality, application-oriented innovative talents who meet the demands of regional economic and social development.
Achievements and Innovation
MUST has been recognized with one national and seven provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites, along with one national and 36 provincial first-class courses. It has undertaken 54 Ministry of Education-industry collaboration projects and has established six provincial-level research innovation platforms. The university is home to two provincial exemplary application-oriented talent training groups and several innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives, including a provincial-level student innovation park and a national innovation hub.
Over the past three years, students have won over 3,000 provincial and national awards in various competitions. In 2023, MUST earned a gold medal and six bronze medals in the China International College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The university ranked 69th in the nationwide list of new undergraduate universities and 20th among private universities in student competition rankings from 2019–2023.
Partnerships and Employability
MUST maintains long-term partnerships with numerous universities, including Northeast University, Xiamen University, and Fuzhou University, fostering collaborations in education, research, and graduate training. With strong support from institutions like Changchun University of Science and Technology and Wuhan Textile University, the university has established initiatives such as the "Academician Chai Tianyou Workstation."
Focusing on employment and service, MUST has signed over 300 agreements with domestic enterprises, creating excellent conditions for internships and career opportunities. The employment rate of graduates has consistently exceeded 90%, with alumni highly praised by employers across industries.
Community and Cultural Contributions
Since 2015, MUST has hosted significant events such as the 16th National University Athletics Championship, the 9th Cross-Strait Green Ecology Cooperation Seminar, and the National University Student Fashion Design Competition Finals for five consecutive years. It has been honored with titles such as "Provincial Civilized School," "Outstanding Grassroots Party Organization," and "Safe Campus."
